NKFU growth program The National Kidney Foundation of Utah (NKFU) announced the selection of Mary Anne Shea as the director of its new Community Based Growth Program. I consider this volunteer position in the Utah area as a new chalone that will ultimately lenge us closer to curing to move help kidney diseases, Shea said. My responsibility is to bring together a strong volunteer group, pool our talents and build a new foundation r r U i for education programs and fund raising activities for the NKF of Utah. Shea said she will be working with business, civic and medical leaders to recruit the volunteer base she needs over the next few weeks. According to the NKF of Utah, more than 20 million Americans have some form of kidney or urinary tract diseases, and millions of others are at risk. In addition, more than 80,000 Americans die of kidney disease each year. Kidney disease is, in most cases, preventable, and in all cases, treatable. Were talking about one out of every twelve of us, said Shea. Kidney disease affects everyone it doesnt discriminate between age, sex or race. In addition to forming a working group to help raise funds for the NKF, were also focusing on spreading the word about prevent- ing kidney disease. Most people dont realize it, but high blood pres t 4 SP sure and diabetes are the leading causes of kidney failure. Thats one area of prevention that we can attack locally, Shea said. Rick Webber, President of the NKF of Utah, explained that this community-base- d effort is eing mirrored throughout the country. The work of the NKF is funded entirely by public donations. Under Mrs. Shea leadership, our new volunteers in Utah will be the NKF locally, working toward the same goals that tens of thousands of other volunteers are looking toward across the country, Webber said. Shea received a kidney transplant in 1990 at the University of California, San Francisco. She also participated in and won two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal at the National Kidney Foundations 1992 U.S. Transplant Games. She is currently a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch in Salt Lake City. They may call back with another angle. For instance, one telemarketer contracted the services of a local photographer to go to the homes of winners to take their pictures. The photographer became an unwitting part of the scam by convincing the people they had actually won. Another company disrep- utable telemarketing businesses and urged them to check the com-pan- ys record with the local Consumer Business Bureau. The name sounded official and similar to the Better Business Bureau, but was, in fact, just a bank of phones owned by the same company running the scam. These are just two examples of variations on old telemarketing scams encountered by Tim Healey, who works for the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) in Salt Lake City. Healey was part of a sting called prize. If you want to gamble, go to Las Vegas. Not everyone who sells products over the telephone is fraudulent. Telemarketing includes legitimate charities and businesses that allow you the convenience of paying by telephone. However, it is difficult to sort out the legitimate from the fraudulent. When in doubt, ask for the offer in writing or simply hang Operation Disconnect that triggered 54 simultaneous raids on fraudulent telemarketers across the country. The point is, if you think you cant get fooled, you are setting yourself up to get taken. The people who are running these scams are much more sophisticated than aver- age consumers. No matter how appealing the offer sounds, you will not come out ahead. Never give your credit card number for verification. No legitimate businesses will require credit card numbers as a form of identification. Do you really need or want the products they are selling? In most cases you could get a similar item at a local store for much less. There are so many scams coming over the phone that my personal advice would be to not buy anything over the phone unless you are the one initiating the call about a product you saw in a catalog or on television. Just think how annoyed you would be if all these telemarketers were door-to-dosalespersons. You should treat your telephone privacy in the same way. Buying should be a consumer initiated activity, not one initiated by a telephone caller. or iiBiiii 197ut!OOC9 Director Randy Boothe, writer and composer on the faculty of Brigham Young University, offers a musical extravaganza of sights, sounds, songs, and stories of Christmas.
