Show i CLIPPER Friday, October 22, 1993 21 r I Lady Darts nip Vikings as state races heat up Bv DOUG LANG Sports Writer With the state playoffs just around the corner, each Lady Darts of Davis and the 5 Lady Vikes of Viewmont. On Tuesday, the state hound Lady Darts heat Viewmont 1 in a tough fought match. In the first game, Davis came out with style as Brenda Barton and Lori Sargent did a great job of blocking every time the Vikes tried to score. Davis jumped out to an early lead until Heather Sheriff gave the Lady Vikes a great boost of team pride. Sheriff, a junior, gave Barton and Sargent all they could handle. This battle resulted in a seesaw scoring battle for the first two games. Mental errors from Viewmont in the first game resulted in the Darts 2 decision. But. this only proved to provide a great second taking a game. Alison Cottle gave the Lady Darts a quick 4 lead with a great display of rocket serves. Viewmont' s Erin Manw'ill finally broke the Darts' scoring run with a great defensive play that sparked the team. The Lady Vikes and from there to the end of the roared back to tie the score at second game it would be another seesaw scoring battle. Sheriff again led her team in blocking and delivered crushing kill shots 3 win. With this win the Lady to give her team a come from behind Vikes needed to keep emotion and momentum up to win this game. Davis 3 lor the deciding game. came back to destroy the Vikes After the game. Heather Sheriff said, "We played great as team in the second game and lost it in the third game. We didn't play well as a team and we just lost our edge. Her sentiment was echoed by Viewmonfs coach Teri Astlc. "We had a lot of mental lapses in the second and third stames and we just got beat. Davis is a great team and they earned the win. We matched up pretty good, but Davis came out on lop." Davis coach Jamie Fox stressed that they let the pressure oil Viewmont We let the pressure off in the second game and in the second game. Traversing the grassy knolls of the Cottonwood Complex, coach Mitch Wileys team placed five runners in the top 15 to edge out Skyline and Davis for the Region 2 title. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Salt Lake Valley at Hunter Park, Woods Cross used strong performances to capture the Region 7 title, as coach Todd Possellis team won the schools second-eve- r region crown. At Cottonwood, Bountiful's Matt Lawrence led a contingent of five Braves with a strong 6th place finish in a time of 16: 10 over the three-mil- e course. Davis Highs Erick Arnell was the top local finisher in fifth at 16:09. Bountifuls Nate Jones placed 9th in 16:16, and John Rosser of Davis was lOlhat 16:25. The Braves clinched the title by just one point over Cottonwood when Ryan Dryer, Shawn Walpole and Shcrm Hadley all finished within five seconds of one another. Bountiful finished with 56 points to Cottonwoods 57 and Davis with 65. Perennial power Viewmont placed fifth at 19 and will not send a single representative to next weeks state finals. The Vikes top two runners were hurt, with Phil Stoddard fighting the flu and placing 37th while Steve Thompson missed the meet all together due to a stress fracture. The top Viking finisher was Trent Hooper in 16th at The Wildcats finished with 51 points, followed by Cyprus with 54 and Olympus w ith 72. In the Region 2 girls race Viewmont was third and Davis fourth behind Skyline and Highland. Viewmonl's Jill Johansen took fifth at 20:09 to lead local finishers, while Lindsey Wagner of Davis was eighth, Nanette Smith of Viewmont took Nth, Merilee Brown of Viewmont was 13th and Brichellc Flint of Davis was 15th. Both the Vikes and Darts qualified as teams for state. Bountiful had just one entry, Jenna Howick, who placed 30th. behind powerhouse East and the slate's top female runner East's Rosie Gardner. The Leopards had 22 points, while Woods Cross scored 64. Erin Shaw took second behind Gardner, with teammates Lisa Henrie in fourth, Becky in Braves. On Thursday. Bountiful visited Cottonwood. Scivally finished the 3.1 mile layout in a time of 16:43.
