Show Halloween week challenges moms those of you in the world who didn't get Halloween costumes in the first week of October, this is crunch time. In many stores, your remaining options are either very expensive, or very lame (which, if you remember, would have worked very' well for my kids). You may be approaching the time of convincing your kids that their last year's costumes are still perfectly acceptable, or that the idea of flinging a sheet over their head and calling them a ghost is brilliant. If you're desperate for ideas, go online and type homemade Halloween costumes" into the search engine. Thanks to the magic of Google, there will be dozens of ideas at your fingertips. Costumes can be tough, because children usually take them very seriously. A few years ago, my daughter went to a Halloween party. Every girl there, with minor variations, was a princess of some sort, except for this one girl whose parents decided to the family and sure enough, it so that but could eat it. me nobody The following year, I hid it even better so that even I wouldn't be able to find it again. That worked. It's still missing. And Ive almost completely given up on Halloween decorations. I did the sticky pictures on the windows once, but as it turns out, theyre not at all sticky. I did the cotton spread across the porch like a spider web and discovered how the box elder bugs enjoy nesting in it. We do have the tradition of choosing our pumpkins together, then taking them home for carving. I tried to convince the kids to paint faces on them this year, but no, they like to light the insides with a candle. So I guess that'll be our fun job tomorrow night. (Who started that tradition, anyway?) In our house, pumpkin carving works with much the same organization as, say, a train wreck. I lay out the newspapers, which will inevitably rip, shift or soak through so as to make them thoroughly useless. Then the kids draw their faces on with a marker, in a design that even a surgeon couldn't cut. We scoop out the insides, amid the childrens squeals of gross and I eat pies made of this stuff? Two long hours later, our pumpkins are carved. In reality though, I dont mind so much. Costumes, candy, and carving pumpkins are among the memories that families are made of. These wonderful years will pass by all too quickly. And when theyre over, I'm taking a really long nap. boys Moon, Amy Rebecca and Nathan Randal. Yep, a pb&j sandwich costume. Let's just say the parents won't make that mistake again. When I was a child, there was one year I wanted to go as a mother for Halloween. But after my mom dressed me with curlers, a bathrobe, and cold cream, I was devastated. I cried at how she'd ruined my wonderful idea. Finally, she put me in regular, everyday clothes, gave me a doll to hold, and bammo, the costume was perfect! I've finally learned not to buy candy until the last week of Halloween, because when I do, we always end up eating it.
