Griffith, clerk of the Utah Supreme court, among whose friends there waa considerable anxiety, owing to hla apparent silence regarding his whereabouts, arrived In Salt Lake City Thursday morning. Hr, Griffith waa seen at hla residence Thursday evening by a Tribune A white man stabbed In the Jaw with a pooket knife in the hands of a negro, and with such force that the blade was brokeu off and half of it left in the cheek; the steel extracted by a bystander who pulled it out with hla teeth: a shut fired into the crowd by the fluting negro, and an entirely innocent colored inn cruelly beaten and almost kicked to death by a mob. These were the exciting incidents following an altercation at the rare track in Salt Lake City lust night about f oclock. That death did not result from the affair is almost miraculous and that a lynching did not occur was due only to the fact that no rope waa handy, and the police were able to rescue the colored man from the mob. on the fair Ths trouble began grounds, in front of the grand stand, and ended on Fifth West street, when the mob dragged the negro from a street car aqd attacked him. The wounded man waa J. H. Meyers of Oakland, Cal., a stableman who follows the racing circuit. The negro who did the stabbing and shooting escaped, and has not been caught, while the other negro, Oliver McManus, was released after being held at the Jail two hours, it having been proven that he was entirely innocent. Before anybody could reach the negro after stabbing he escaped through the back door and then ran to Fifth West, where he jumped on a standing car. Before th car started, however, the mub was around him and pulled him off, and after being thrown to the street, he was trampled on and kicked about until the police arrived and took Hm to th jail. At the time of the stabbing Foster Jones of Dallas, Tex., who was in Salt Lake City with a string of horses, went to the alii of Meyers. Jones found it impossible to grip the broken blade with hla fingers, so resorted to his teeth, and after four or five attempts succneded in pulling It out. About two hours after th stabbing Meyers, still under the Influence of liquor, appeared at the Jail, and after positively seeing McManus declared that he had had nothing to d0 with either the shooting or stabbing. Previous Investigation by the police had already convinced them tof this, and Chief Pitt ordered the man released.
