A week ago A. T. Mitehelaon arrived In the (ity with a letter to Secretary Reynolds, stating that Unrle Sain had decided to also establish hers the engineering driwrtment of the forest service. Mr. Mitehelaon is to be the chief In charge of this department here, with an office force of seventeen assistant engineers. These assist' ants will have Ogden as their headquarters, and will be detailed from here to work out and handle the engineering problems that come up from time to time on the various 1M forest reserves located in the United States Office rooms have been leased in the First National bank building, and by the epd of March they will be turn' Uhed and ready for business The forest service ie Just now In Its Infamy, and their headquarters for Ogden means that as the service grows Ogden will reap the benefits In the way of additional offices Secretary We are not through with Reynolds: them- yet; we have others on the string that we will eventually land for Ogden." The dating of this Important epoch In the history of Ogden commences back in February, when C. 8. Chapman, assistant forester, came West to look Into the feasibility of establishing headquarters in the Interm uuntaln West. He stopped over In Ogden, and was within a short time in the hands of the officers of the Weber club. He was shown the advantage of Ogde.i over all other Western locations, but left for Salt Lake City with the promise that he would look over the field there and report to the department tl Washington. After investigating conditions there for two or three days, he came back to Ogden and closed for lease of the Simmons warea ten-yehouse at a monthly rental of $250 for the supply depot From this depot wilt be distributed to the various reserves all their supplies, such as all kinds of building materials, office furniture, field instruments, stationery, telephone materials, fence materials, etc. Mr. Chapman stated that all suen supplies would be purchased In the local markets where possible. This department will employ some forty ta fifty stenographers, clerks, warehoui men, etc., all of whom will be under the civil service. Before leaving Og den, Mr.' Chapman stated that the forest service was anticipating the establishment of a half dosen division engineers' headquarters through the Western country, and that he would recommend one of these offices for Ogden. Instead of doing this, how ever, he made the recommendation that only one general engineers' office be established and that one to come to Ogden. The result Is that Jile recommendation was accepted, and that Mr. Mitehelaon Is now here opening offices for hla department Mr. Smith will have charge of the Simmons depot, and will arrive In Og' den within a few days to superintend the opening of hla department - -- ar WALL PAPER OTHERS ARE PAPERING NOW-W- HY DONT YOUT THERE WILL BE NO BETTElTTIME TO PICK DESIGNS OR HAVE WORK DONE THAN JUST BEFORE THE SPRING RUSH. Gold and Silversmiths Wm THIS CITY The strike of the Rio Grande shop employes will not affect Ogden to any extent, and, according to Agent Cronin, everything will move along as usual. He slated today that there were only about three men employed In this city, and that others were coming to take their places la order that any engine that might become defective here might be repaired. Other cities along the line, however, are not so fortunate. It Is said that 1.50$ men are out between Salt Lake City and Denver. Machinists, boilermakers, boilermakers' helpers, blacksmiths, blacksmiths' helpers, pipe meu and apprentices have all laid down their tools and the strike la about .th most complete that has even taken place on a Western road. More than 300 men quit at Salt Lake yesterday on receipt of a strike order sent out from Denver, where 100 men had previously walked out. At Helper, Thistle, Bingham, Tucker, Green River, In Utah; Pueblo, Grand Junction, Salida, Alamosa, LeadvUIe, M inturn, Gunnison. Chama, and Ridgeway, In Colorado, the men all quit work. Ogden escapes any serious effects of the strike due to the fact that there are so few men employed hers In the repair shops, but It Is said that should the strike keep up for a week, them will not be a wheel turning on the system. The machinists are the leaders In the strike, and the others have gone out In sympathy. It la said that for every stop that an engine is compelled to make on a trip, It necessitates 50 cents In repairs, and that repairs are necessary on every engine after every trip. GROUTS Seed and Grain Store All OGDEN TODAY SPECIAL LIGHTING Today you do honor to the memory of the good St. Patrick. History U not very clear as to the patron saint's origin, but .you have him and you honor him. Of course, you must not be led Into the error that every man or woman you see today prominently displaying the shamrock Is an Irishman or a Colleen. No; some of them came from European countries, and Asia, and even from Jerusalem but that dear little, sweet little shamrock of Ireland" la the flower of them all today. Of course, the day here la observed quietly enough; but there are cities well marked on the map where the shllellagh will be wellded with a willing and strong arm should a piece of orange ribbon be obtrusive; and tomorrow there will be cracked and ack-In- g pates; and If you were to whlstlo The Battle of the Boyne" you would have a first-clafight on your hands But well, here's to the memory of the good 8L Patrick. MAY BE RESUMED There la a strong probability that the special lighting system which was formerly in vogue In Ogden may be returned. At last evening's session of the city council Dr. Dickson made a motion to the effect that the aystem be dismantled and the property sold. At this Mr. Flygare arose and Informed the council that a proposition was on foot whereby the system may be leased to private parties. In which case the city would get the lights free. He announced that certain parties had tha at the matter under consideration present time, and that overtures had been made to the city for the leasing of the system, and as there was a chance for the city to get thla service free of charge, he asked that the matter be dropped for the present, which was done. ss NOTICE OF DISSOLUTION.
