I At last evening's session ofthe city council George Shorten, sanitary Inspector, submitted tha following report of contagion for the past week: Measles, 102; scarlet fever, II; smallpox, 11; diphtheria, 5; chlckenpox, I a total of 111 caaee aa against 121 a week ago. The contagion la gradually spreading and the altuatlon la gradually growing worse. Sanitary Inspector Shorten la doing all in his poqrer to check the diseases, but has been unable to do so, and the situation demands more strenuous measures oh the part of the city health board. When the report waa read last evening Mr. Dlckaon arose and addressed the council. He said that the situation had become alarming. Incised, and that something must be done, and that at once, for the checking of the contagion, and said that stricter Quarantine measures should be observed. Dr. Powers, chairman of the health board, agreed with Dr. Dickson. He said that he believed that the sanitary Inspector waa doing all In his power to remedy the altuatlon, and that he had Instructed him that If he did not have the necessary assistance In the work, to employ what help was needed. He stated In thla connection that he had been Informed certain physicians had not reported cases of contagion promptly, and that this waa a most serious menace to the work of the health board. He said that there waa great laxity and serious menace to public health In the fact that so many chlckenpox, cases were pronounced and the people were prone to look upon this aa unimportant and nothing waa done. He argued that the many mistakes aa to the real nature of the disease was one of the worst feature of the situation, and advocated that tha quarantine be aa strict against chlckenpox as against smallpox. Mr. Flygare then moved that the matter be referred to the board of health, with power to act TAMPA. FUl, Mar. 17.
