That ia the Question That tha Officials art Trying to Selva Either Jumped or Accidentally Fall from the Bridge At Sanitarium and ia Drowned. Did James Godfrey of this city take his own life by deliberately Jumping into the raging torrent of the Ogden river Just above the sanitarium yesterday. or was his death due to an accident? That Is a question that will probably never be determined to the atlsfactlon of every one. Judging from the stories told by the only ones who know anything about the case. Godfrey met his death at 4:20 yesterday afternoon by falling from the footbridge across the river, leading from the main roadway across to the cave from whence issues the hot water that supplies' the sanitarium, about three hundred yards below. The body was recovered half an hour later lodged In the brush along the bank at the bend about two blocks west of the sanitarium. .It was Immediately brought to Lindquist's undertaking parlors, where It will await burial. The body Is frightfully bruised and rut from contact with the sharp rocks in the stream. Woman In Tha Cass. Investigation Into the affair develops the same old story, except that there were two women In the case Instead of one. It appears that Godfrey met the two women In Salt Lake some time ago, and they all went out for a good time, and when he left to return to his home at Ogden, the women promised to visit him here Sunday. This they did. and he took them tq the sanitarium on the street car. One of the women waa a Mrs. Fallon, a stenographer, and the other a Mlsa Helen Smith, a waitress In a Salt Lake hotel. After spending some time at the sanitarium, Godfrey proposed to Miss Smith that they take a walk to the spring, a short distance above the sanitarium, but on the opposite side of the river. She consented, and they climbed down the bank and started across the foot bridge recently constructed by the sanitarium company for the convenience of the officiate of the company in reaching the spring from the resort The bridge Is about two feet In width, and is protected by a railing along both sides, making It appear highly Improbable that a person could fall off. Miss Smith states that she was In the lead, and that ahe knew Godfrey was following close, as she could hear him directly behind her; that when she reached the opposite side she turned about and was astonished to observe that he was nowhere In sight. She took It as a Joke, thinking that he had hidden from her In order to frighten her. Therefore she walked to the spring and sat down for a while. She peered Into the steaming cavern, thinking that perhaps he might have preceded her and hidden himself there, but she did not find him. She waited a short time longer and then returned to the sanitarium, where she learned that his body had been recovered from the river. Miss Smith declares that she did not hear a sound; that the man never uttered a cry as he went over, and she did not hear his body strike the water. This Is natural, as the roar of the river would drown any ordinary sound. Dot clones, is expensive wArenj upTfiis iarcfe Cseiraiawvusa stWwsswaiST aanitw caieass. good. They gave the alarm and gave chase, following the body down the river until It lodged In a clump of bushes where the river bend sand cuts through the dugway Just west of the sanitarium. There Is one peculiar feature of the story that would Incline one to the belief that Miss Smith was afraid of God' frey. It Is stated that Just before at' tempting to cross the river, Godfrey asked Miss Smith to marry him, but she declined, giving as her reasons that she had not known him long enough. She then secured possession of a revolver which he carried and fired the gun Into the air until the cylinder was empty, after which she crossed the river ahead of him. Godfrey Was Drunk. It appears to be certain that Godfrey was under the influence of liquor at tho time of the accident, and this may have been the primary cause of his losing his life.
