LOB ANGELES, Feb. 24 Thoae who took llurt'o claim a. heavyweight champion of the world oerloualy, muat have received a Revere Jolt at the Partita Athletic club laat evening, when the' much-toute- d Kentuckian waa beaten all over the ring by Tummy Bums of Chicago, who landed at will, but could nut knock out hta heavier opponent. The referee awarded the bout to burn. Ftom etart to finish, with the le exception of the tenth and twelfth rounds, when Hart had a very aniall advantage, Buma outfought the him and bigger man, outgeneraled beat him at every jiolnt in the game of boxing. At times Bum., although handicapped In weight and height, made Hart look Ilka a novice. In the opening round Burna waa very nervoua and lacked cotifldence. After llilq, however, he quickly .Iced Hart up and began a systematic attack on Ida face and body with straight lefts. In the third round he tarted the blood flowing from Hart'a mam and kept It running In almost very round thereafter. In the fifth Buma cut Hart over the right eye, and in the following rounds battered the optic until It waa closed. The left ye waa also badly marked and Hart'a face presented a bloody tight, pracpoe-nib- tically throughout the tight. Hart failed to show any championship form of any sort. Hta persistent attempt, to rough It In the clinches earned tlw disapproval of the crowd, which appeared to be with Burns al; moat to a man. Burns style of attack waa to shoot hla left to the face or the body and step inside of Harts swings, allowing them to go around hla nock or ducking them entirely, llart simply could nut land on Bums, and toward the latter part of the fight tried hkrd to rough It and wear Burna oat by using his weight In the clinches. The fight waa tiresome, one round being much like the preceding and following ones. In the fourteenth Buma appeared to have a chance to knock Hart out He caught the bigger man a right and left on be jaw that sent him staggering for a moment. Quickly seising hla advantage, Buma hammered Hart about the face and head until he forced him to cover up and give ground. In the laat few rounds, seeing the tide of battle going against him. Hart, Tommy urged by hla chief second. Ryan. tried desperately to comer hla opponent and administer a knockout. Every attempt failed, however, and every round Increased Boms lead. llart weighed about 195, while Hums' weight wss given as 175. Thanks to the efforts uf Henry Howard of the Eastern Yacht club and the munificence of the club he represents, this year, which so far would otherwise be an as international yacht racing is concerned, will witness such an event of unusual interest. It has been definitely settled that an International yacht race between three small sloops, representing the Kalserllcher Yacht and a similar number representing the Eastern Yacht club will be raced off Marblehead in September of this year. The arrangements were clinched by a cablegram which Mr. Howard, chairman of the regatta committee of the Eastern Yacht club, received from Admiral Barandon, chairman of the racing committee of the Kalserllcher Yacht club. By permission of President Roosevelt, the costly trophy to be offered by the Bastem Yacht club will be known as the Roosevelt club. The kaiser has also offered a cup to be sailed for in return races at Kiel In 1907. so that the racing with small yachts la to be encouraged by extraordinary Incentive, this being the first time In the history of the sport that the heads of two great nations have acted as sponsors for the cups to be offered In competition. The conditions governing the Roosevelt cup are broad and liberal. Any yacht which is enrolled In a recognised club, and which fulfils the conditions of the match, subject to the absolute control of the Eastern Yacht clubs rules, will be eligible to the elimination races, to be sailed off Marblehead In August. After the international race the cup will become the sole property of the owner of the winning yacht. The conditions also provide that the races shall take place In alternate years off It is possible Marblehead and Kiel. that the scope of eligibility may be broadened In future years so that yachts from the continent and Great Britain may take part. Already plane are making for the building of boats for the race. Charles Francis Adams will build from Mr. Baurd man's designs, and he has also two other orders. F. A Frenchman named Marcillac is now preparing to make an air voyage to the north pole. He Is as confident of success as Andree waa, and the Americans who met Andree In 1895 well remember how sure he was that the Journey could be made and that he was the man to make it. There la one great difficulty In arctic ballooning and nobody knows bow to overcome It When Peary made his journeys on the Inland Ice of Greenland, a mile above the sea, he noticed that In the mornings hla tent poles and the stakes to which hit dogs were tied were covered on the windward aide with frost an Inch thick. The humidity in the air was congealed and the tiny ice particles found lodgment on anything In their path.
