An Unqualified Knava. If any man should know all about treachery, he should be that mun. He then became a candidate for the legislature from Weber county and was elected. He then aspired to the speakership of the house branch of the legislature and his wishes were realised. He Is now an avowed candidate, a year and a half hence, for the nomination he failed to win over alx months ago. That lie Is as unqualified a knave aa ever hoped for high honors all who know him will roncede; but In the main they fear him. He owns the Ogden Standard. The fear of him la especially true In and about Weber county, where hla paper circulates, and carries with it the dread that peaceful men feel toward a bully and a braggart. Hence the pressing necessity for some vehicle to make plain to all that now know him not, what manner of creature he la. He cannot, therefore, be spoken of. discussed or referred to according to any accepted code. A single statement will suffice to prove this. During the recent senatorial canvass Olasmann, In hla usual nonchalant manner, declared that it could be asserted as a verity that any man who voted for Thomas Kearps for United States senator had been bought by Kearns. In less than a week he was voting for Kearns, so thdl whatever inay be thought of the Junior ITtuh senator, no one. reading this declaration of Olasmann can. by any possibility, have any lingering uncertainty aa to what Induced hlin to support Kearns. And this on his own statement A Dangerous Msn. He is a dangerous man, and we propose to' make the people of thla state know him. If knowing him. they then want him, that is their misfortune, and no doubt he will represent them to perfection. He is dangerous not because ot vast Intellectual capacity combined with a perverted moral aense. He la dangerous because he Is a fool a fool having at times the convictions of a itellglou enthusiast with the premature Ideas of a child regarding economic and social affairs. He la typical of that wretched state agntust which Popes warning words were uttered: a dangerous little learning thing Drink deep or taste not the Pyerlan spring; Its shallow draughts Intoxicate the A 1 brain. But drinking largely sober us again. He has assailed the word of men representing great commercial Institutions In this state. It seem well night inconceivable that this could he done by one whoae truth and veracity were challenged In a rourt in this state, and concerning whom witnesses were examined to prove that under oath he would not be believed. Tet it Is true. Is It possible the people of Utah, or the mnjority of the Republican party, would nomlnnte for the high office of representative to congress a person against whom such a charge had been made, a charge that had so far been proven that Olasmann never pushed the case for rebuttal, and never nougat pur-poo- to attack the etandlng and character of those that had branded him aa unworthy of trust, even under oath? Yet thla man was elected speaker of the last legislature. He It was who assailed the atate board of equalisation, who aaaaulted heavy taxpayers and charged evasion and practically perjury on many recognised as among the foremast cltixens of the state. And this speech was circulated broadcast throughout Utah, while he had the braaen effrontery to ask that S50 of state ntonev be appropriated to give It a wider publicity. That Buffalo Ranch. The case referred to deserves more detailed reference. In the years gone by this person ran a buffalo ranch He near the lake. In Tooele county. owned some cottages on this ranen. which were duly Insured. They burned. He received from the Insurance companies the amounts to which he was entitled from them. Then he began suit against the railway company to recover the value of the cottages, claiming that the railway company was responsible for their destruction hy fire. Then It was that his character for truth and veracity was attacked in the manner and with the result above alleged.. We have already stated In these columns that he la a pronounced blackmailer and one of record. Naturally those who have been subjected to his attempts at extortion to which end the sheet controlled by him (the Ogden Standard) has been freely employed are loath to make public his demand. But if Mr. Glasmann. or those of his kind, think the proof ol attempted blackmail does not exlsL and cannot be made available, he has only to Institute proceedings for criminal libel against us. and we will see if the evidence cannot be produced. Extortion and Blackmail. Some of the very corporations which are the victims of his false and .malicious attacks are in possession of written evidence of hi wilful attempt at blackmail; but. like many a rogue, he presumes that he will be let alone because he Is not considered of enough importance, and because, also, a publication of the facts might induce a run of parasites and rogues of another kind. He needs but ask any person acquainted with reputable men ha in the places where Glasmann lived and done business This is also a matter of record. The flies of the Third district court In 1893 disclose the fact that a case waa then pending. In which E. A. Kessler, as administrator of the estate of Andrew M. Mortimer, sued Bella L. Lynch, William Glasmann and Evelyn Glasmann. This suit was Instituted to recover possession of a piece of land situated on the west side of toe Jordan river which was purported to have been deeded to Bella Lynch in 1890. The deed was made out and acknowledged by Glaamanu, who was then In the real estate business In this city. What gives strange color to the proceeding above referred to. is the fact that Mortimer, whose name waa signed to the deed on a May day in 1900, had then been dead several years. Suit was instituted for the recovery of the property, and It was charged by E. D. R. Thompson, the attorney for the plaintiff, that the signature was forged. When the case came on Glasmann took the stand and swore that on the morning of the day on which the deed was executed a man stepped Into his office and offered to sell a piece of property for ITS; that he paid the man the money, made out the deed to Bella L. Lynch, acknowledged the same, and had thereafter never seen the man.
