Roberts, according to hie own testimony, and according to the certificates introduced in evidence, was since December, 1903, up until the time of the arrest, a member of the "Secret and Mighty Order of Modern Nlmrods." He testified that he waa "let In one night by a inan whom he met on the corner of Second South and Commercial streets and who gave hie name us James Gorman. Gorman told Roberts to meet him at the Germania saloon that night if he wanted to be placed In a position to make something like $50 a week. Before that time Roberts had, among other occupations, worked at jieddllng provisions for a local commission house. This had not brought him in $50 a week. He said he was willing to make the $50 a week and met Gorman at the appointed time. During the conversation which ensued Gorman told Roberts that he had some hides and If he would take them to the county clerk's office he would get the money on them. "There isn't any danger, Roberts was assured, according to his testimony. "Anything that I send to Davies will be all right. Auditor Tin-ge- y won't turn the certificates down, and If he does it will onty cost $800. The hides were given to Roberts and he took them to the city and county building as directed and obtained the scrip. Roberta said tbat he and Gorman worked in conjunction for a considerable time after that The certificates which were given by Deputy County Clerk Davies were always cashed at a discount and Roberts kept his share of the proceeds, and Gorman took his. The witness said that he went to California for a little trip, during which time he did not know, what was done by others in obtaining bounties. When he returned, however, he resumed his former work under Gorman. An old valise full of hides was introduced in evidence late in the afternoon. These Roberts Identified as the hides on which he had obtained bounty two or three times. Roberta said that they had been given him by Gorman, who claimed tbat they bad been purchased in South America. The hide of a "bob cat he had worked off as a mountain lion. Coyote hides cut in one form meant coyote pelts. In another, wolf hides. The witness said that he had taken the same hides to the clerk's office three times and had obtained different amounts of money upon them each time. The only manner in which he could explain the magic work was by saying that he had fooled Davies in the count. "Davies la a fine fellow, I gave him $20 because he had treated me white. remarked the witness once. The case was continued until 10 o'clock this morning. Last night the Woodmen of the World held a masquerade ball at Toiler's academy. Many orglnpl and unique costumes were brought out by this event, which waa easily the most successful of Its kind this season, no fewer than 300 couples attending.
