As has been the custom , in the Southern Pacific machine shops and car shops for the past few years, yesterday wus chosen as a day of weeding out the surplus in the force of shop employes. Notices were posted the shops yesterday to the effect that all employes at both places be laid off Indefinitely. . is to The reason for their lay-o- ff weed out the men not needed ns a result of the small amount of work at the present time. The men who will be laid off will be placed on the extra list and taken back as work Increases. During the summer months a large force of' men is required as those are the heavy months of the year.
