STATE has been our fate to lose many wonder ful scenes in the world's drama; but the mis sing of that pathetic meeting yesterday be' tween Charles F. Murphy and David B. Hill is the greatest loss of a long life time. The pa pers announce that the hatchet was buried and that Murphy and Hill came together and posed with others for a photograph. It must have reminded onlookers of the kiss sun Murphy ing of an iceberg by a mid-da- y representing the sun and Hill the iceberg. Under the genial rays of the Tammany boss that cold being of Hill would melt and trickle down in soft contrite drops. It must have made to weep the strong men who looked on. Think of August Belmont shaking to pieces with sobs as he saw these two men finding each in the other a long parted kindred soul. It was more heart rendering than the scene in which Charlie Hollingsworth relinquished his aspirations for the state senate, in order to give a better show to Murphy that tender exotic of the political It union became apparent to Republican eyes, there has been a fright and an almost hopelessness in the G. O. P. so perceptible as to deny it is to be absurd. The latest tune whistled by these adherwant to ents of Rooseveltism, who the old keep up their courage, is story of defections from Democracy. The Postal Telegraph company is coming found Every time some Democrat is who has been holding a Republican job and to town with its wires. It has received a who wants to hold it during the balance of favorable franchise in Salt Lake and it is to be this year and to do so is willing to say that he is hoped that similar favor will be extended in for Roosevelt, the crowd of whistlers break Ogden so that no delay may occur in getting out into a loud chorus. Bless your dear souls, this additional service. All the talk by Republicans of Democratic defections is nothing but whistling through a graveyard in order to keep up Republican courage. FEW CHURCH-GOER- S. Only eighteen per cent of the people of the big cities attend church on Sunday. So some statistician has found by compiling the data from London, Paris, New York and other great gathering places of humanity. The man who makes the figures drifts off into almost limitless space with the inquiry, why is He thinks that it may this? be due to a recurrence to paganism, the old faith or unfaith primitive of men. But it is probably due to the feeling on the part of city dwellers that they must have a day of rest in the country, or a day of pleasure at resorts or a day of quietude in the home, removed from the usual human associations of the week. That country people attend church in larger numbers in proportion to population, is only partly because of the more natural reverence that is felt by men who dwell under the open skies and next to the soil and who see Gods handiwork in every growing leaf and every bursting bud; and not less because of the fact that in the country people go to church on Sunday to see each other. In the city people see enough other people through the week; and they dont need to go to church for that purpose. The decadence of modern religion, as shown by the fewer communicants of churches in proportion to the population, is not due to paganism in the old acceptance of the word, but to absolute carelessness. A hundred if man a did not attend church it ago years was because he was an avowed infidel or agnostic, fixed, argumentative and controversial to the last degree. Today nine men out of ten who do not attend church, positively refuse to be drawn into a religious discussion. They care nothing for the subject. The real reason then for the poor attendance at church in cities as elsewhere is that men find their lives filled by so many other things as that they are absolutely indifferenton thissubjectof religious observance. The complexities of modern civilization are responsible. WE commend the Hon. Ed Callister to the cold wet towel for his head and to weak tea and toast for his stomach. The tremendous exuberance with which he treats the Cutler candidacy for the governorship, shows that his feelings are overwrought with enthusiasm in behalf of his successor. If anybody doubts the necessity for the ice pack and the cooling diet, let him just ask the Hon. Ed what he thinks of John C. And now Anarchist General Sherman M. Bell is rebelling against the man that made him, the governor of Colorado. He wants to continue his tyrannous job and he thinks the governor is mistaken when he says that the troops may be safely withdrawn. Bell is distinctly right. No district where he is, can be called pacified. The Salt Lake county Republicans have issued an address in which they say that Utah must poll a heavy Republican majorNo, not must this year. It was must ity. four years ago; and it was must two years ago; but this year it is do as you lease.
