One of the most fashionable weddings of the season took place today when Lady Isabel the third sister of the Duke of Roxburghe. was married to Guy Wilson, of Tranby Croft, and brother of Muriel Wilson, The bridal couple were the recipients of countless wedding presents of great value. Including a handsome .gift from King Edward and Queen Alexandra, and a magnificent parure of diamonds from the younger Duchess of Roxburghe, formerly Miss May Goelet of New York. ROXBURGHE'S maintained our ' reputation as roasters and blenders of coffee that is always uniform in quality. A. FOLGER OX CO. San Francisco Importers of Fine Coffees JOURNAL, JOS.F j GEO. 23, 1804. Law and justice everyobdy else'a property. are trampled under foot. Organised They make war upon every man anarchy prevails. The American people cannot witness who owns a store, a factory, a home. what is taking place In Colorado without the gravest apprehension. It le no longer a strike that la happening there no longer an ordinary contest between capital and labor, or between workmen. It union and la government by special lnteersts carried to lta logical conclusion thnt Is on exhibition. A lawless mob, supported by the militia. Is giving the mining camps the kind of law and order" that the mining companies desire the same mining companies which debauched the legislature and prevented the passage law made mandatory of an eight-hoa amendment adoptconstitutional by ed by an overwhelming majority of the people of the state. Thoughtful men, no matter whether their sympathies be with or against the striking miners, with or against organised labor, cannot but feel the deepest concern at the spectacle of the soldier succeeding the magistrate In an American community; duly elected civil officers being compelled to resign under threat of lynching; Judges closing their courts and fleeing for their llvea; cltlsens, untried and unconvicted, being Imprisoned and deported. If lawless acta were committed by the miners, then their lawlessness has been more than duplicated by the mine owners, who, with the whole military power of the state at their command, are holding a carnival of lynch law. All citizens who value American Institutions are dismayed. They see the non-unio- n: ur government by corporate corruption yielding lta natural fruit In unbridled disorder and military tyranny. They know that the mining and milling trust. In whose service the militia le acting, haa done with the law making power of Colorado what the trusts have often done at Albany, what the corporations of Pennsylvania habitually do at Harrisburg, and what unscrupulous wealth does aa a matter of regular business at many state capitals. They know that the mine owners of Colorado have been systematic law purchasers, systematic ewayers of legislators and judges. They know that these mine owners, rich and powerful, and socially uppermost, have steadily set an example of lawlessness to their employes and all others. They have done what the trusts are doing everywhere bringing law Into contempt by poisoning it at Its source. This corruption has not been more glaring In Colorado than In numerous other states, but as yet Colorado is the only state In which the military forces have been frankly placed at the orders of the corruptionists. The lesson of Colorado, full of sinister warning. Is as broad as the. suffrage? On popular reverence for law. No men among us have a stronger Interest In Inculcating this reverenco than the rich, since they have most to lose by Its weakening. Therefore, when the rich as Individuals or banded Into trusts, deliberately strike at reverence for the law by corrupting Its makers and administrators, they throw down the defenses which guard their own il-- sessions. Let it once get firmly fixed In the, minds of the people that law Is to be bought by the wealthy from legislators aa a matter of course, and that Judges, again as a matter of course, are the creatures of the conscienceless rich, and how long would It be ere Colorado conditions repeated themselves widely? In Colorado, and this worst of disasters la directly due to the great mine owners who have debauched the peoples elected representatives in the legislature and got from them by abhorrent means what they could not get honestly at the polls. Hence riot and lawlessness; hence the militia and the suspension of American government; hence a social and Industrial convulsion, the dire effects of which must be felt for yean to come in bitter class hatred, Insecurity of property, diminished business and higher taxes.
