Democratic brothers and sisters, let us not be at all supercilious toward those Republicans who are wrestling1 with the There are two plank at Chicago. strong reasons for our treating them with generosity and respect. First, they are doing the best they can with a difficult situation, anti-polyga- anunexpectedsiluation.an ungrateful situation; second, we are likely to be against the same thing ourselves in about two weeks from now. At the same time, it may be well to call the attention of conniving politicians to the fact frequently suggested by thinking men on the Democratic side namely, that it was hardly worth while for Republicans to show such anxiety about the Democraticattitude on the polygamy situation, until the aforesaid Republicans should have passed their own naThe dispatches indicate tional convention. that our mammoth friend, the Hon. James H. Anderson, of Salt LakeCity.has discovered the fact at Chicago that there are some eighty-tw- o millions of people in continental United States who do not agree with him, and that it is not the easiest thing in the world even with tre-tneud- ous UTAH STATE JOURNAL. Other men, through midst of many trials: ambition and misunderstanding, through their own acts or through the misjudgment of others, may have created some doubts, some jealousies, some enmities even among the Latter-Da- y Saints. Wilford Woodruff has led a life so completely free from guile, as that all the members of the church love and trust him implicitly. He has not an enemy on the face of the earth." And so it might be said of the dear Owen Woodruff, f who has gone. Out of a large heart given to love of mankind, he bestowed so richly that his affection wou its great return and all who knew him loved him and all who loved will mourn his untimely demise. . BOYCOTTING A NEWSPAPER. The Rocky Mountain News, of Denver.has been bravely outspoken concerning the situation in Colorado. It has denounced the military oligarchy which rules the state, and which defies the constitution and outrages all human decencies. An attentive reading of the News shows that it has condemned violations of law, no matter by whom or what element perpetrated. It has' stood for orderliness and good feeling in community life. It has put at the aid of the people all its splendid facilities for exposing crime and bringing criminals to punishment. But its pronounced attitude against the despotism, which has been created by the governor and General Bell, has brought down upon its devoted hedd the hatred of the mine owners and certain allied interests; and a boycott has been declared and made effective against its advertising columns. Business advertisements to the amount of $8,000 a month have already been withdrawn from the News and the end is not yet. Instead of printing a paper of sixteen pages with fifty columns of adverting, the News comes out w ith ten pages and only nineteen columns of advertising and most of these are either small want ads" or foreign announcements. No more foolish effort was ever undertaken than this attempt of the criminal military power and its sympathizers in Colorado, to crush a great newspaper. Of course it will fail. The News, in an editorial, bids defiance to its enemies and refuses to be coerced or frightened into any retreat from its position. Were it a small struggling sheet the brutes who seek its death might succeed; but it is too well established in the affections of the people and it is too well supported by the money of its proprietors to suffer any such fate. Long may the Newrs live to wage war against the iniquities which are damning Colorado in the eyes of the world. influential andseductive voice to persuade the representatives of the Republican moiety millions that the general of these eighty-tw- o sentiment must be subdued for the sake of Republican success in Utah. By the way, it is rather a condescension, is it not, to make the sordid appeal to the party of great moral ideas, that any adoption of an antipolygamy plank at the Republican convention at Chicago will jeopardize and probably lose this state to the Republican column. Is that a threat? Or is it a mere squeal ? What a pity it is to see a great man like Jim Anderson having to beg and bulldoze the national Republican party into a desired attitude! How much better it would have been if the whole thing had moved harmoniously, according to the understanding of four years ago leaving the Democratic party, so unpopular in Utah with the powers that be, to take all the responsibility of this controversy! The damage has now been done to the Republican cause. If the plank shall go into the platform after the Hon. James H. Andersons solemn warning, it will prove to Republicans in Utah that their national party does not care a cuss for them. If the warning shall be heeded, it will prove to all the people of Utah that the Republicans of this state have no confidence in the gener. osity or devotion to principle of their national and offer must a bribe party, political always The whipping post is growing in popularin order to procure its silence on the local isity in the South.
