The fury of the wind was such that they could neither advance nor retreat, and they spent a terrible night huddled together on a tiny ledge against a projecting spur of the rock. On the following day, half frozen, they managed to find their way across the Wetterhom and MIttelhom summit and eventually descended to the Urbach valley, completely exhausted. MARRIES A GIRL TO 1 8AVE HER FROM CRIME 1 ' LONDON, June 21. Efforts to claim a girl by marriage have resig- nally failed in the case of Sarah Tinsley, aged twenty, of Newcastle-under-Tyn- e. A few weeks ago she was charged at Hanley police court with theft. A young collier who was in the court offered to marry her If the bench would dismiss the charge and this they agreed to do. The wedding took place last Saturday, the bride being given away by the police court missionary. But the newly made wife did not reform, and the next night she w'as arrested at a music hall on a charge of stealing money from a baker's shop. When brought before the same magistrate again yesterday in her name of Parton, she pleaded for "an-ofli- er but the bench senchance, tenced her to a months imprisonment, saying that she had brought disgrace on the man who had been good enough to marry her. For the first time in forty since the whipping post was abolished In this state, a prisoner was whipped on the public square here by the order of Judge John J. Riley, of the police court. Simon Scearce, a sixteen-year-onegro boy, struck Duke linker, a white child without provocation, as the testimony showed, and Judge Riley sentenced him to be publicly whipped by his mother on the public square. The boy was taken to the spot by two policemen. Then the mother, with a rawhide, furnished her by the court, gave him twenty lashes in the presence of the largest crowd ever seen on the public square. The blows were laid on with considerable vigor, and the boy cried with pain. Heretofore it has been the custom to chastise juvenile offenders by whipping them at the stationhouse, in the presence of only the court and the officer This method did not appear to have a deterrent effect, and Judge Riley became convinced that only the humiliation of being phlpped in public will answer the purpose. Judge Riley announced that hereafter when it was found necessary to chastize juvenile offenders it would be done publicly in the public square. The crowd that had witnessed the of It whipping generally approved Some, however, were of the opinion that the aged mother should not have been made to apply the lash, but they didn't know she had asked for the privilege. s consul-gener- al THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR Anhe- Brewing association.
