Show DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH FRANK J. CANNON, EDITOR. PUNISHMENT FOR KEEPING A PLEDGE. What would the Women's Federation have? Here it is debarring Mrs. Chester E. Coulter, of Ogden, from a place on the programme of the meeting of women s clubs at St. Louis, simply and solely because in her capacity as a member of the Utah legislature she voted for the Honorable Reed Smoot for United States senator. Has the Federation no respect for the sanctity of a pledge? Mrs. Coulter is regarded as one of the most prominent and cultured club women of this state. In order to secure double advantage of her usefulness at home and her enhanced reputation abroad; her friends suggested a term in the legislature. Animated, no doubt, by similar motives, Mrs. Coulter Was not this entirely favored the plan. laudable? The situation was such according to authoritative pronouncement that Mrs. Coulter could be nominated only upon giving her pledge of honor to vote for Reed Smoot. Ac cording to the same authority, Mrs. Coulter-deplore- d the necessity it seemed a large price to pay for the place. But painful as was the promis in its making, Mrs. Coulter gave it like a shrewd politician and kept it like a good woman. According to her high ideal, Mrs. Coulter could do nothing less than to vote for the Hon. Reed Smoot after having pledged herself and having been nominated and elected to that end. A recent Representative of tho Amorican Federation of Labor Will Speak Friday Night. The esteemed Deseret News seems to be slightly techy because this paper quoted from the headlines of the News telegraph columns a "definite announcement" that a subcommittee of the senate would visit Utah to further investigate the Smoot case. In an editorial on the subject the News at once imanplies that it has made no such definite nouncement," repudiates responsibility for the definite announcement," and gives, to itself a certification of reliability in making definite announcements." All of which is as satisfactory as it is unnecessary. At the same time, the News in big headlines cfamake such definite announcement; and furthermore, in the first column of the front page of the identical issue in which its repudation appears, the News reiterates its prominent labor leader has arrived In Ogden.
