Among the remote deposits long known that are receiving attention are those of southern Utah. It will therefore Interest many people to know that K. Leith of the United States geological survey, who visited these dediscposits in the fall of 1903, has ussed them briefly in the survey's bulletin No. 235, entitled, "ContributiIron ore pected before. The coal lands lie on a high bench with a small range of mountains to the north, while all the known veins dip away from the hills Into a dry valley to the south, where abundant and good water Is to be found at a few feet front the surface. A few claims of 16rt acres each have been located, but there ore several thousand acres of ground that are known to contain coal which have not yet been located. Considerable of It Is not even surveyed by the government. The vein is the most promising part of the developed section on the surface and ranges from eight feet wide to eighteen feet at a depth of 154 feet. This Is on the claim owned and developed by II. C. Petty, who lives near Coal Wells, which place Is a stage station on the desert between Candelaria and Tonopah. The walls at the bottom of the incline shaft are of slate and are two feet wide while the coal is fourteen feet wide at the face of the drift nt this pont. The coal Is bituminous and of high quality, good for both steam and cooking purposes. Samples of the coal have recently been brought to Tonopah, where tests have been made and the coal has been found to be excellent for domestic purposes, being very dean and leaving a clear white ash. CL ons to Economic Geology, 1903." The deposits are deposited along the dopes of a spur of the Wasatch moun. kins bordering the west side of the Ugh plateaus of Utah, where the sountains break off to the Escalante tart on the west. The district Is melted by the Salt Lake, San Pedro I Los Angeles railway to Lund, and thence by stage about twenty-tw- o Biles across the Escalante desert to Iron Springs and Iron City, near which are located. The exposure of the Iron ores He in meral isolated groups in an area trending nearly southwest-northeas- t. They extend for a distance of about eighteen miles, and range from a few feet to two and a half miles In width. The ores appear In conspicuous narrow ridges and crags, following roughly the countours of the hills and sometimes rising as much as 100 feet above the base of the outcrop. The ore appearing In the Jagged exposures Is a hard, black crystallised matlte and magnetite In varying Proportions. Moat of the ore that has kn reached by the teat pipes and tafts is a somewhat soft, earthy, red kmatite, containing much magnetite. the ores show that a considerable Proportion of this ore is of good grade, trough for the most part but Just what that proportion is roalns to be determined by further wider ground work. The economic Importance of these Posits, depends largely on the conditions and possibilities of manufac-,B- r and transportation. The nearest railway, the San Pedro, Los Angeles Balt Lake railway, passes about twenty-tw- o miles west of the moun-ui- n range. COAL SALT LAKERS ARE MUCH INTERESTED There la no longer much doubt that the asphaltum oil deposits off Promontory Point will receive the attention of capital nnd be vigorously developed. A special from Salt Lake today says that the samples recently taken there by P. J. Donohue have attracted great attention. Commenting upon It, the News says: The offices of J. H. Bigger and asso elates was besieged with visitors to day. The attraction was several bottles of asphaltum oil brought to the city yesterday from the well of the Great Salt Lake & Promontory Oil St Asphaltum company, oh Promontory Point In Box Elder county, yesterday by P. J. Donohue and H. W. Sherman. That the owners of the well are satisfied that they have a good thing Is evidenced by the fact that they are re ported to hare recently turned down an offer from the Culmer syndicate which sought to purchase the proper' ty. While the price named was fair, was not considered by the owners inviting enough to accept. The company is now forging ahead with its development, and the drill Is nearing the point. The visitors were unfortunate in not seeing the drill In operation; they happened along Just at the time of a temporary shutdown. A representative of the company courte ously showed the visitors about and gave them every opportunity to learn something of the district A Kansns City syndicate, operating as the Royal Oil company, is about to Install a new rig.
