Show DAILY The awful the criminal looseness of our REPUBLICAN TREACHERY TO ORGANIZED LABOR. The labor organizations in all parts of the have been thrown into a condition of country the inextinguishable rage by what they call duplicity and hypocrisy of the Republican Mr. party in relation to labor legislation. of LaGompers of the American Federation bor is so angry that uncontrollable emotion dams the flow of bis talk. For ten years now a Republican congress has promised to pass law, law and an an eight-hou- r and other mechanics for the protection of the manual laborers of the land. But every year on the close approach of adjournment they have switched the industrial train off the track. Last week the trick was turned again. The committee on labor in the house held a anti-injuncti- on good many meetings during the winter, heard a host of witnesses who came from all parts of the country at their own expense, and has made voluminous and vociferous promises that now congress would pass the law which laboring men require. Congressman Gardiner, Rep., of New Jersey, authoritatively repeated this solemn pledge only recently, but the Republicans of the committee have concluded not to pass or report any bill this time" and have referred the whole question to Cortelyou of the department of commerce and labor, to report in the dim future. The Federation of Labor, the Knights of Labor, and all other associations of labor, union and declare that they have been misled, and in deceived, defrauded, short, lied to very deliberately and systematically, and they are correspondingly resentful, wrathful, outraged and disgusted.' uon-unio- n, hocus-pocuse- d, THE NEW CULT OF SUICIDE. Notwithstanding the glory of modern civilization, despite all the added comforts and opportunities of life, suicide is so remarkably on the increase in this and other civilized lands as to appall the attention of religious and materialistic thinkers alike. In 1891 the suicides in this country numbered 3,531. In ' 1903 the number had increased to 8,597; and it is stated that the rate is increasing similarly in European countries except Russia, where, notwithstanding the hard conditions pf life and the increase of general crime, there has been a decrease in the last decade of suicides. There is no adequate word to describe this situation. With society ' improving in all departments and with the world growing gener ally better, there are vaster opportunities and greater rewards, and life should become sweeter to all human creatures; and instead of placing such valuation upon the existence as the circumstances would justify men and women alike seem anxious to evade the responsibilities and continuation of earthly career. It almost looks as if there had been a recurrence to the old idea that the dissatisfied one has a right to end his dissatisfaction by walk- ing out of the world. The following by John D. Crimmins ap in the current issue of Democracy: pears For the first time in my recollection the Democratic party will not have to apologize for Tammany Hall in any way, shape or manner. In the hands of Mayor McClelan the present administration has been such that its acts in New York will prove a tower of strength to the Democracy in the nationa campaign, and will go a long way to elect the candidate of the party, who, I firmly believe, will be Judge Parker. There is no doubt in my mind that Judge Parker is the stronges man who could be nominated on the Democratic ticket. He is conservative, a man of force and character, and a farjstronger candidate, to my mind, than even his best friends have imagined. The fact that Judge Parker has been confined closely to his judicial duties up to this time will in the long run count strongly in his favor, and not against him. Every man who knows the Judge knows that he wil make an ideal man in the presidential office. : Personal Pointers : j marriage laws are exemplified by a case Gertie is reported from Washington, Iowa.
