Except for the doubt of one or both of these men and their immediate followers, there could be no doubt of Democratic success this year. Is it not a pity that a victory so much needed by the people and so otherwise well assured for Democracy, should be made doubtful by the personal attitude of two men in this country from which men Democracy deserves more consideration than from any other citizens of the republic? Grover Cleveland did not make the Democratic party nor did he make it victorious. He was a mayor of Buffalo when the Democratic party of his state found him. Tammany endorses Cleveland and Cleveland endorses Parker; and yet Tammany does not endorse Parker. And thus you see that things equal to one common relator are not always equal to' each other. Parkers friends believe that the leader of Tammany Hall has a deep laid plan which is best served by his insistence upon the nomination of Grover Cleveland. They have reached the conclusion that he is opposed to Parker because he desires to prevent the return of David Bennett Hill to power. Incidentally he must show that Parker. is not the united choice of New York. And when the name of the man upon whom New York can unite, shall be demanded Leader Murphy will not say Grover Cleveland,. but George B. McClellan." In other words the Parker men believe that Mr. Murphy is simply using Mr. Cleveland as a stalking horse for Mr. McClellan, and furthermore that Mr. Cleveland knows the ignoble part which be is being asked to perform in this manipulation. i ti - REPUBLICAN ANXIETY. i i I!-I 1 s .f'-- i - . both rules.
