DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, THE SUH IS DUD I y GREAT i 3. 1 1 EARTH 8UBSERVIENT EVERY ACTION, Registering Mark TO Instruments Now in All the Phases of His HIS Use Existence. i i Abbe M. Moreux of the Obwrvatory of lioprges In France, In discussing the influence of sun spots in recent electric disturbances, says: of The interesting communication t ' 1. "! 54, : on recent electrical connected presumably disturbances, with sun sjiots has shown the Interest which attaches to studies of the sun. Not only is the sun the grand promoter of terrestrial accidents, but it is he who rules the life of planets and each of the tributaries of this giant world has its counter stroke in our tiny glulie, In gravitation at a distance milliards of leagues. of thirty-seve- n We are then bound to his life and our registering instruments mark all the phases of his existence. Many spots show themselves on the disc taken in the observatory of Bour-ge- s, measuring no less than 40,000 kilometres. It is a very beautiful formation, quite regular in form and tending to break up some days ago. From all parts clouds of lire seem to try to encroach upon them, but the fiery furnace, where above all masses of hydrogen and of unknown gases are burning; resists every threatened invaM. Frammarion, ?! ' i A i 5 i.'i- b: r A rj i . sion. :.?! Everywhere distorted tongues of fire, with ejections sparkling like gold infusion, dart their drops of gas, which are immediately consumed in contact with the masa On the 13th it passed to the central meridian. That was the day on which one could expect some telegraphic troubles. The telephones implied a weak perturbation, but the magnetic needle, shuken anew as on October 12 and 31, showed oscillations measured in the observatory of the at more than one degree. In the article of M. Flammarlon, mentioned above, the eminent astronomer asked whence proceeded these manifestations, and he concluded that neither the spots nor the rings gave an exuct coincidence. Recent works on this question throw some light on the question that throbs with Interest. THE BUN IB A VARIABLE STAR. Our sun is a variable star of the same class as the stars of this kind observed in the heavena Before ar riving at a definite condensation, at its final incrustation, each star seems to oscillate by emitting all kinds of to rays, by successive strokes, so V s! M 5'i! ir.i !:q Val-Joye- ux t r IS. 1 j hi 1 i 'f. : i Young was successful In a protuberance of 300,000 kilometres, 267 kilohaving a velocity estimated at metres a second. Riispiglii has declared that he proved as the fad that some velocities were kilo800 even 700 and 600, high ns metres a second. In general these In the great velocities were found equatorial regions of the sun, where the spots are most abundant They accompany nearly always the regreater spots and undergo marked of the period crudescence during eleven years. At these moments of continual effervescence each point of the aolar surface in the lower latitudes emits vapors analogous to those which arise from terrestrial volcanoes. These are the strange and inexplicable eruptions In which prevail largely hydrogen, helium, calcium, Iron, barium and other elements, all reduced to a state of Incandescent vapor. Little by little they cover a larger part of the sun, and sometimes they are observed in the direction of the poles of the solar body.' They form then Immense aigrettes, quite analogous to those which discharge themselves from the negative poles of electric machines. During these intervals the condensation of the sun continues by successive degrees of impetus, and the three pulsations, so to speak, of phenomena of another kind appear in the polar regions. VERITABLE RAIN OF FIRE. To these phenomena the name of has been quiescent protuberances given, but they are really immense masses of clouds from which there descend upon the solar surface veritable whirlwinds and torrents of molten metal. These phenomena, following the Intermediary periods, attain vast proportions every successive thirty-thre- e or thirty-fiv- e years. The last phase of this character occurred in 1870 and it ia expected that Its recurrence will mark the year 1905. It la a further remarkable fact that these magnetic disturbances are all grouped together in the yeara which occur about one year before tbe maxima of the aun spots. These disturbances throughout the or thirty-fiv- e period of thirty-thre- e years are Interrupted each successive period of three years or more. Thus there will probably be magnetic dU' plays during 1904, 1905 and probably 1906. jSf NEW YORK Delightful Luncheons JST NEWS LETTER NEW YORK, Feb. 5. The highhanded methods of the gaa trust have at last exhausted the patience of a long suffering public and the citlxens, thoroughly aroused, have declared war against the trust and are vigorously upheld and supported by the municipal and state authorities. Mayor McClellan has taken the initiative and Issued strict orders to the municipal authorities to make a careful investigation of the numerous complaints of the cltsens concerning the poor quality of the gas furnished by the trust and the high bills rendered for such inferior service. Commissioner John T. Oakley of the department of water supply, gaa and electricity, in obedience to that order has ordered his. experts to begin without delay a careful Inspection of the quality of the gas furnished to consumers in Greater New York. It is charged on apparently good authority that the gas supplied by the truet Is made of the poorest and cheapest grade of oil i of an inferior quality and is forced through the pipes under high pressure, to make the biggest possible showing on the dials of the meters. Owing Jo the existence of certain laws which, it la charged, the gas trust secured from the state legislature with the assistance of liberal bribes, the authorities are practically powerless, aa they have no means of exerting any pressure upon the trust Since the beginning of the anti-trucampaign several bills antagonistic to the interest of the truet have been Introduced in the assembly. One of the bills provides for the appointment of a commission to examine the quality of gas in New York City and report to the legislature means to correct the existing evil Another bill provides for regulating the powers of the trust and reduces the price of Illuminating cents. If it is true, gaa to seventy-fiv- e as has been charged, that the gaa trust spends considerable sums of money every session to prevent the passage of laws inimical to trust interests, there Is not much prospect that the two laws Introduced under the pressure of public opinion, will ever become effective. The indignation of the citizens ia so great, Just at present, however, that the legislature may come to the conclusion that it would be unsafe to antagonlxe public opinion at the present time. st Then the solar fever will decrease and greater atmospheric calm will on our probably prevail globe.
