Show DAILY 4 UTAH STATE JOURNAL, community UTAH STATE JOURNAL strengthen OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON. EDTTQft. MUST THE SENATOR MISQUOTED, H$E BEEN . In another column of this issue appears the report of an alleged interview had with Senator Reed Smoot by a representative of the New York World. The heading over the article Mormon Senator Denies Polygamy, is quoted from the World. It is extremely improbable that Senator Smoot says all or much more than one half of the injudicious and dangerous things attributed to him. It will be difficult indeed to get his constituents in Utah to believe that he uttered this unkind and disloyal sentiment: I have no sympathy with polygamy." Not even an apostate from the church if a son of a plural household, or married to a daughter of such household would say that. Equally difficult, if not impossible, will it be to convince the men and women of Utah that Mr. Smoot uttered any such sentiment as the following : There are not more than 600 polygamists in the entire state. It is fast dying out, and will never again be a serious question for private or public agitation. The few who remain are old men, and with their death polygamy will end." Much more likely is it that the reporter either manufactured the entire statement or completely misunderstood the distinguished senator and apostle. It will be remembered that a few weeks ago Senator Smoot was quoted as expresing a sentiment to the following effect : That he would obey the law and observe the constitution even against a revelation from God, coming through the Prophet, Seer and Revelator. Such a statement would be an absolute denial of the spirit of the entire movement. Direct Revelation was restored to earth in order that men might be lifted above the frailties of worldly unwisdom and that they might have an opportunity to obey the perfect law. The apostles are not only the oracles of that perfect law represented by continuous revelation, but they are of necessity the leaders and exemplars of the obeying host. It is not possible, therefore, that Senator Smoot, an apostle eager as he is to retain his scat ever made any such recantation of his faith. Of course if Senator Smoot has said all One of the ideas which takes renewed strength from the banquet of the Weber and Commercial clubs at Salt Lake is the necessity for enlarging the membership and intensifying purposes of the Weber club of this city. From its consultations and its movements in the past, have gone forth many projects and many energies for their achievement to the great benefit and the enduring profit of the community. But splendid as have been results in the past, they have not reached the full limit of possibility. For instance. Salt Lake has several clubs, and yet intends to have a thousand members of its commercial organization; and, in comparison, the Weber club, the only one in Ogden and therefore making its singular and exclusive demand upon the community in the interest of the town, should have not iess than five hundred aggresThere is a prejusive and earnest members. dice against ordinary club life which should not attach to the Weber club. It is at once a place for social meeting and a chamber of commerce and a board of trade for Ogden. In its rooms, with proper confraternity of membership and business feeling, might be developed from day to day the enterprises which would enrich Ogden in every department of her community life. Every business man should count it one of his duties to sustain an organization of this character; it will cer tainly be to his material advantage. The old spirit of Ogden which prompted all her men to stand together for the citys good has in some respects given way to the individual interest spirit, prompting successful men to concentrate all their energies upon individual enterprises no dqubt to the great benefit of the city and the county, but of necessity to the neglect of some of the wider and more public enterprises Enlargement of the club membership, the devotion of the controlling spirits to public enterprises, frequent meetings at stated times for the consideration of questions affecting Ogden all these will build up the community spirit of the city and inure to the welfare o every business man and citizens generally. these things he has been dangerously indiscreet in talking too much; and the quality of his utterances is even more menacing than the quantity.
