The Telegram says: The year that is drawing to a close has been an auspicious one for Utah many respects. The promulgation of the Moffat road and Western Pacific road plans, and the completion of the Lucln cut-o- ff by the Southern Pacific have given a decided impetus to the varied industries of the state and resulted in a vast amount of good by drawing many Utahward for the investment of foreign capital. W. S. McCornick, president of McCornick A Co.'s bank, in discussing the conditions of the past year in Utah's commercial life, said for the Telegram last night: "There have been improvements in the commercial affairs of the state in the present year, more particularly in the sugar beet industry. There have been Improvements in the mining and smelting industries, and in the railroad has been situation. The Lucin cut-o- ff completed this year, which means much to the railroads of the state. "Conditions have improved generally all over the state, in comparison In with 1902. In the mining and smelting indust- ries, employing their, armies of well paid men, the output has been greatly Increased over that of 1902, and the wealth of the state has accordingly been made greater. What are the commercial prospects for 1904?" was asked. This Section. The recent sharp decline without any apparently sufficient cause in the stock of the Mining company situated at Dark City has caused much comment in mining circles. Friends of the company who ought to know the condition of the property say it was a sunk Jobbing scheme, and that the mine is likely to be as good as ever. The price is recovering nnd showing more steadiness. President J. J. Duly of the company has issued a ciiculur letter to the stockholders in which he has conservatively stated the real conditions existing ut the property. The letter in part is as follows: Regarding the finances of the company and my only excuse for not taking them up in detail is that the annual meeting of the company will soon be held and that formal statements will then be submitted. Some eighteen months ago, after the had purchased the property of the Anchor company, we had In the treasury, clear of indebtedness, approximately It Is a fact, also, that before much development work could be done the management was compelled to make many costly but necessary improvements, Including the creation of boarding and sleeping houses for employees, blacksmith and carpenter shops, ore and coal bins, eta, to say nothing of the rebuilding, changing, enlarging and equipping of the concentrating mill. Then the widening of the main shaft had to be done, the operating tunnel had to be practicnliy reconstructed, brought to grade, retimbered, reflumed and laid with new ties and heavy rails, while many miles of drifts had to be straightened, raised or lowered, and many miles of car tracks had to be relaid. New cars, tools, power drills and mine equipment of almost every conceivable description had to be provided and Innumerable stopes had to be retimbered nnd made safe for the men. To do all these betterments and Improvements has cost an immense stun of money fully $250,000 and the making of the same has seriously Interfered with the development work straight mining and reduction so that the present indebtedness of the company is approximately $60,000. Speaking further of the physical conditions of the property the letter says: DKCEM1SKU OGDEN FURNITURE OF WHAT PRESIDENT J. J. DALY SAYS OF THE PROPERTY.
