Instead of forcing a strike In order to throw themselves out of work, as the company would have you believe, they have been goaded into their action and are striking now simply for the privilege of maintaining an organiSince the strike at Scofield sation. two years ago, the company has compelled every man who entered Its emd contract that ploy to sign an not would or Join he belong to a union and would deal directly with the company in case of trouble. To 'deal directly and individually with the company meant that any man who made a complaint of any nature would be summarily discharged. "A year ago a secret attempt was made to effect an organisation in ormake unanimous demand for der the redress of certain grievances. The company got one of its spies into this union, secured the names of the fifty men who belonged, and discharged every one of them. When the strike was called by President Mitchell two weeks ago, he gave orders that an attempt should be made to extend the organisation to the west so that men would not be induced to fill tre places of strikers in Colorado or mine coal for the Colorado Fuel and Iron company. Before a single organisation came to Utah 346 miners at Sunnyslde met, organised a union, and voted, 216 to ISO, to go out From the moment the strike was declared the company has had the town full of armed guards, who went poking their guns in mens faces and exasperating them in every way possible, evidently trying to provoke them into unlawful acts so that the militia could be called out In the face of all this provocation excellent order has been maintained. I defy the company to prove a single case of intimidation against the strikers. If any offense has been committed you may be assured that the sheriff, who is a creature of the coal company, would have locked up the offenders without any loss of time. The lawless acts, such as stopping of peaceable cltisens on the public highway, the threats of violence and, now, the arrest of Demolll, have all been on the other aide. When Demolll first arrived at Scofield they tried every unlawful means to run him out of town. The threatening letters about which so much ado has been made here, in all probability, were written by the minions of the company. It would seem so, at any rate, from the celerity, with which the company has found them and given them to the press. 1 can assure you that the men do not want to remain out on strike. All that they are striking for now is recognition of their right to unite for mutual protection and a pay day. It all goes to the American smelter at Murray. Three lots of 100 tons each have been shipped from the recently discovered ore body which was opened on the 1,400 foot level, which is said to have averaged nearly 40 per ton. In addition to this the concentrating mill has been treating 200 tons of ore a day since it went Into operation several months ago. Development work has at the same time continued with a large force of men, and new ore veins have been encountered which are being opened up, so that enough ore has been blocked out to Insure a continuance of the present output for an indefinite period.
