Who Chanced to See Them. w The first consignment of Christmas trees reached this city yesterday afternoon. Thre were five carloads of them, each car containing about 500 trees. Between now and Christmas it Is expected that many thousand spruce and balsam saplings will arrive in this city from the forests In the northern section of the country and Canada, destined for the south and west. The Adirondack!, Catskills and Wisconsin forests supply most of the trees for eastern boys and girls while those of the southwest and west depend upon Montana and the adjoining states. The trees that arrived yesterday caused a big atlr and youngsters who chanced to see them danced around the great mass of trees. Many of the trees to arrive In the future will be destined for Sail Francisco and the Hawllan Islands, For months past the wood-cutte- rs have been getting them ready. With woodmen as guides, experienced buyers go Into the forests and select the trees they want before full has turned Into winter. Then there are months of chopping and packing. Among the trees which arrived here were specimens for which from 50 cents to $15 will be asked. The finest and best trees come from central Canada and are known as the double balsams, and are much in demand.
