So much haa been Intimated by Jacob Schlff, who la the largest owner in the banking house of Kuhn, Loeb ft Co. The Southern (Pacific Railroad company ia not the same thing .aa the Southern Pacific company of Kentucky, which la a holding and operating corporation. The Southern Pacific Railroad company ia a consolidation of the Southern Pacific railroad of California, Arixona and New Mexico. The bonded debt of these three consolidated roads bears 5 and per cent IntereaL according to the issue, and the Idea la to obtain a lower rate of Interest The present bonds, amounting to nearly $70,000,000, begin to mature next year, and they will then be retired by Issuing substitute bonds bearing 4 per cent IntereaL Mr. Schlff,. who haa been visiting in San Francisco, stated that the corpormake a first ation would probably mortgage for the whole amount, to secure the new Issue to take care of the old bonds aa they fall due. Sir Ernest Cassell and Robert Fleming, noted financier of London, are in Mr. Schiirs party, and it la believed that the purpose of their vialt la to Inspect the Southern Pacific properties, with a view to making part of the syndicate to underwrite the bonds. It was Mr. Schlff who hacked Harrlman in the attempt to get the Northern Pacific control away from J. Pierpont Morgan and J. J. Hill, and which caused the famous Blue Thursday, about three years ago, when Northern Pacific shares were run up to $1,000. Morgan and Hill continued to retain control of the property by calling in the preferred stock of the Northern Pacific, held by Schlff and Harrlman, and converting It into bonds without vesting power. Morgan then organised the Northern Securities company, the famous merger declared illegal by the courts. In that company Harrlman ia a large holder, because he had a great deal of Northern Pacific common stock besides his holding of the preferred shares. But hia holdings of the common stock were not at any time sufficient to control either me Northern Pacific or the merger company, "Which Includes the Great Northern, the Northern Pacific and the Burlington.
