Show DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON, EDITOR. THE POLITICS OF THE CASE. A popular idea has been and, perhaps, still friends in is, that the administration and its reathe senate were determined to jo to all sonable and several' unreasonable lengths to The preserve Senator Smoot from expulsion. reason for this belief is perfectly consistent. The unseating of Senator Smoot before the next election would be to jeopardize Republican political interests in Utah and two or three The several electoral states surrounding. votes and the control of the legislatures in these states are objects of vast importance to the administration and the Republican party; and it should not be expected that any unnecessary political disaster would be invoked at this time. So far, then, the general opinion of the supposed attitude of the administration would teem to have been fully justified. But there enters into the situation at this time an element which may be deemed of still greater importance than the control of two or three of the small intermountain states. The religious opponents of the Mormon church are determined to make this the occasion of a demonstration in force throughout the country against the practice or encouragement of plural marriage; and they are seeking to arouse the churches, the womens clubs and organizations to an intensity of feeling which will create such demands upon the Republican without party as cannot well be ignored of in some the large states jeopardy placing of the East and Middle West. Just as the Mormons themselves feel proud and joyous at the opporlunity which this investigation has afforded for the promulgation of their doctrines and the testimony of their leaders; so the preachers of other denominations are glad to have their chance at the issue thus presented. From present indications UTAH STATE JOURNAL, , . plural marriage. To say that politics will not be influential in determining the result of the present controversy is to count that the Republican party has ceased to guard its own interest. Occasionally a question arises of such magnitude as to make politics a subordinate consideration, and such may be the case in this Smoot matter ; but no issue has appeared in recent times so important as to entirely obliterate political purposes in the minds of the leaders of the dominant party. It is speaking moderately to say that there is a genera uprising throughout the Eastern and Middle Western states on this subject. The newspapers devote more space to the Smoot investigation than to any other matter now before the public. The Russo-Japanewar is relegated to second place as a sensation. Leading journals burden their columns with the different phases of the testimony produced by the different witnesses who have appeared before the committee. Whether the administration an d the party leaders at Washington shall choose to take action at this session of congress or shall prefer to wait until next winter, the people of Utah may rest assured that there will enter into a decision of the case the great element of Republican desire to hold the sentimentalities of the big states even though, in accomplishing this end, it shall be necessary to throw away or jeopardize all chance of Republican control of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. This factor of the greater number against the less must be taken into account when the friends of Senator Smoot express the opinion that the administration and the leaders of his party are determined to protect him in his seat is a matter of political advantage. se 1 The country is now absolutely certain that Theodore Roosevelt, if he shall live, will lead the Republican forces this year in the contest Mr. David Mattson is visiting with friends at Brigham City. True, they are to be his advisers and counsellors, and from their opinions he should be able to derive much of help; but his should be the master mind. Is there a Republican in this state or in the nation, in fact, possessed of reasonable intelligence, who really thinks that Theodore Roosevelt is mentally equal to any one of three or four men who have occupied cabinet positions under him? UHnatural that the canning Wreber of and. Davis should seek at companies this time to enter into a combination for the advantage of their mutual business. Perhaps trade conditions are such outside of Utah, where a large part of their product finds its market, as that without such combination and the greater strength and economies resultant therefrom, they are unable to compete with any present profit to themselves or any expectation of enlargement of the business here. But such combination should have neither the form nor any of the evil effects cf a trust. More than that the combination should not be utilized to decrease the price paid to the farmer and the orchardist for the vegetables and fruits which the canneries use. Indeed if the combination is to be of the greatest benefit to the community, as well as the individual stockholders, the price paid for the raw materials should be somewhat enhanced.
