Show DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL, MONDAY, JANUARY 25, 19(M 1' 'ill UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON. EDITOR. THE LAW'S INADEQUACY. asEvery two years the state legislature sembles and sits for sixty days, plus a few for good measure, and when it adjourns the commonwealth is in possession of a large lot of bran new, latest approved and strictly up-to-d- ate laws, these being added to the mense volume previously in stock. And yet, massive, penetrating, diffusive and innumerable as the statutes are, they do not and apparentwith ly cannot reach to or in any manner cope some of the offenses taking place continually. A most flagrant crime has recently been consummated in Salt Lake City, and the perpetrator has escaped. Although he and his present whereabouts are well known, and there is not the slightest doubt of his guilt, he is immune from arrest and punishment. The facts are, briefly, that an Eastern man a few months ago, representing himself as single, proposed marriage to a susceptible young girl, was accepted, and the marriage ceremony was performed by a pretended justice of the peace, who had no authority whatever under the law to officiate. A forged license was also exhibited. In blissful ignorance the girl lived with the scoundrel as his wife until the business becoming known he took his departure without notice and returned to his family in Iowa, leaving the girl in a delicate condition and poorly provided for. The legal luminaries of Zion announce that he cannot be successfully prosecuted, for what reason is not very clear to the layman ; but if they are right, docs it not show how painfully inadequate our criminal statutes are ? The villain who is guilty of so dastardly a crime secure in the home he has disgraced, laughing at the laws imbecility, a girl ruined and left upon the world without home or friends is it not a sorrowful, awful situation ? The false personator can, of course, be reached and visited with condign punishment ; but as he was doubtless a creature of the and may not have had full comprehension of his lawless work, what small satisfaction all im- Trip, THAT INVESTIGATION : Personal Pointers The sensation produced by the telegraphed announcement that the senate committee would make a thorough investigation of Mormon Olenn Scott of Saratoga, Wyoming, methods was not very vibratory and, properly ia in Ogden.
