Bekes-Csab- Bekes-Csa- ba GOVERNOR WARFIELD OF MARYLAND INAUGURATED Md Jan. 13. Edwin was sworn In as governor of Maryland at noon today, succeeding John Walter Smith. The occasion was one of enthusiasm for the thousands of Democrats who came from all parts of the state to participate in the ceremonies. The retiring governor and hia successor were escorted to the state capitol by a military parade composed of the militia companies of Annapolis, the Fifth regiment Veteran Corps of Baltimore and the cadets of the St. Johns college. The addresses were delivered from the front portico of the capitol. In his Inaugural address Governor Wnrfleld reaffirmed the pledges of his party and counseled economy In the appropriation of funda for educational and other institutions requiring state aid. Following the addresses there was an adjournment to the senate chamber, where the oath of office was administered to the new executive by Chief Justice McSherry of the Court of appeals. Papers and addresses of live interest to fruit growers were presented at the session of this, the second day of the nnnual convention of the Arkansas State Horticultural society. Some of the speakers and their subjects were as follows: Jacob Bauer, Judsonia; "The Agricultural Zones of Arkansas. S. H. Nowlin, Little Rock; Pruning of Fruit Trees, A. W. Poole, Oxark; "Marketing Elberta Peaches," J. A. Taylor, president Indian Territory Horticultural society; How to Grow and Prune a Peach Orchard." 8. W. Steward, Van Kuren. The Arkansas exhibit at the approaching world's fair at St. Louis was the chief subject discussed this afternoon. The sienkers Included George R. Two big advances have been made in all lines of optical goods within the last two months by concerns which control the entire manufacture of such goods in the' United States. The advance, which was made this week, amounts to from S to 100. per cent on all lines of optical goods and is in pursuance of a notice sent last fall to wholesalers and Jobbers all over the country. NEW YORK, Jan. 13. Edwin Markham, the author of The Man With the Hoe, is to be the guest of honor at the anniversary dinner of the Thirteen club tonight. The affair Is to take place at the Hotel Savoy and Judging from the preparations it will be one of the most unique functions even seen in the metropolis. The annual twelfth convention of the National League of Commission Merchants convened here today with about 300 delegates In attendance. Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, New York, Chicago and Boston were among the rities represented. At the conclusion of the welcoming and responsive speeches routine business was taken up. Questions Involving the highest welfare of trade will be considered by the convention, among the more im- portant being that of how to and distribute fresh food products. and the granting of greater power to the interstate commerce commission to enforce its rulings. J. H. Churchill of Dodge City called the meeting to order and presided over the Initial session, which wus devoted to officers' reports and business of a routine character. This evening the members and visitors will hear an address by Eugene Davenport, dean of the Illinois College of Agriculture, on the subject of Agricultural Leadership. The regular sessions of the meeting will be resumed tomorrow morning and will continue through Friday. The attendance is larger than usual and the meeting promises to be one of exceptional interest and importance to the agricultural interests of the state.
