It will be noticed that Truth does not give the name of its alleged Republican informant; but there is no difficulty in guessing whom Truth means Mathew Stanley Quay, of Pennsylvania. At least it would be Senator Quay, except for the indiscretion which characterizes the admission of Salt Lake Truth into his confidence. ' How easily and hew jocundly all the Smoot trouble is dismissed! A pretended investigation is to be ordered and a predetermined report is to be adopted regardless of what the investigation shows! And all this lest the Republican party shall lose nine electoral votes in the intermountain country by the unseating of Smoot! The argument is not logical even though it does come from high Republican authority. Not nine electoral votes, but at the most three are at stake. What possible effect can the unseating of Senator Smoot have upon the electoral vote of Wyoming or Idaho? None; unless the proponents of that idea are willing to admit the gravamen of the charges against Senator Smoot that ecclesiasticism in Salt Lake City controls the politics of surrounding states. In fact, what effect would Senator Smoot's expulsion have upon the vote of Utah? None; if the people are governed by principle, instead of being governed by dictation from ecclesiastical sources. Is this the timber of Republican policy in the United States today? Does the leading Republican who lets Truth into party confidence mean to be understood as saying that questions are determined, not by the rule of right, but by the estimate which party leaders may make of the prejudices of certain locali- in SPECIAL HOLDAY SALE tails SHOW GIRLS THAT ARE PRETTY.
