Show DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL, 4 THEY COMMEND THE FIGURES WITHOUT THE LOGIC. UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON. EDITOR. TIME TO HALT IN THIS The Utah fuel companies appear desirous of riding; a willing horse to death. Having; of Utah succeeded in getting; a asked to leave the state without having anv crime; it was quite easy for the fuel companies to undertake the arrest, imnon-reside- nt com-mit- ed prisonment, prosecution and persecution of a resident of Utah whose crime, if any, is so e intangible as that the chances are ninety-ninout of a hundred no jury can be found to convict him. A. B. Edler, attorney for the striking miners, is charged with libel. If he committed any offense it was in speaking plainly for his clients who were getting very little hearing before the country. His arrest and prosecution demonstrate the high handed way in which the fuel companies are proceeding. They purpose to have all the rights to which they are entitled and all the rights to which everybody else is entitled. A note of warning was sounded at the time of Demolli's arrest; but no heed was paid thereto and the state is likely to find itself involved in far reaching and long existing difficulties. The executive and other officers, military and civic, will be upheld only in doing their plain duty; and they should be aware that the tide of public sympathy has set in strongly against the fuel companies, and that anything which they may do beyond that which the law authorizes and demands, will be visited with public condemnation and perhaps heavier penalties. A SCARE ABOUT GERMAN WAR. A certain Colonel Jones of the Hawaiian militia has leaped into instant notoriety by discovering that this country is on the eve of war with Germany. Colonel Jones, heretofore unknown to fame so far unknown that the ordinary writer cannot give his name or even his initials has made a report to Governor Carter at Honolulu showing that conflict between the United States and the empire of the kaiser is inevitable, and basing his conclusions upon alleged social conversations had with General McArthur. To give force to. his utterances he has discovered also that there were few Germans in our army at the time of the war with Spain; and from this alleged fact he argues that even American citizens of German birth are ready to join in the worlds plot now being conspired by Emperor Wilhelm and his followers to overthrow the growing control and sway of the United States in South America and the Pacific. This is one of the modern startles. Here is our all comprehending and diplomatic service scattered over the face of the globe; here is our state department in immediate touch with all the secret purposes of foreign courts. Blind all of them blind, to the danger which menaces us from without and from within. And here is Colonel Jones, a militia officer in Hawaii who is obliged to sound the note of warning of warlike purposes against us on the part of the Kaiser and the treason of millions of our long trusted fellow citizens. Despite the fact that the associated press gives currency and some authenticity to such vaporings, the country may rest itself in perfect quietude. There is no danger of that kind of war with Germany; first, because Wilhelm second will not become the aggressor, and second, because American citizens of German birth would take up arms for this country even against the fatherland if they were compelled to choose. ONLY A PARTIAL WARNING. The New York World states that Utah Mormons have been warned that the state must purge itself of church interference in politics or run the risk of losing its representation in congress. Whj Utah Mormons any more than Utah Gentiles? For every Mormon suppliant at the feet of the church power in Utah, there have been two Gentile sycophants. For every determined and consistent Gentile opposer of church influence in politics, there have been two Mormon remonstrants against that influ- ence. If the church leaders have appeared in politics or if they now appear it has been and is largely because Gentiles beseech their influ- A DECEMBER ONE j Thats about the way they are going now at BURTS.
