SEPTEMBER LITTLE NIGGARISM. 3 1904. 22, Clad EDWIN HAWLEY IS ELECTED DIRECTOR. Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Railroad Will Extend to the Pacific Coast. A No Mend Hose They Never Have to Go to School With Holy Stockings Paul THE Now that moiv light has iliroan upon the affairs of the been West- ern Pnciiic Railroad company, news of an interesting and important character in relation to the proposed line is appearing almost every day in the The latest reports of liisiKttelies. more than usual sigiiifit-aiieis to the effevt that Edwin llawley, one of the best known railroad men in the country, and a successful opponent of E. H. Harrlman, of the Southern Pacific, has been elected as a Western Pacific director in the place of llenry F. Kortmaim, who recently resigned. This move is taken to mean that the Goulds who are the main barkers of the new line, do not caiv to face ltarrlman alone, and therefore bate called In Hawley, fresh from his victory over the Bonthern Pacific's president, to act as their ally. In past years llawley was a friend of the bite C. 1. Huntington, and he is also on good terms with Henry E. Huntington. This knowledge haa led to the Inference that 3!rs. C. P, Huntington and H. E. Huntington will finance the Western Pacific to a large extent. George Crocker's name is also mentioned in this connection .Hawley is so aligned that he can command money, being at the head of the Iowa Central railway, the Memphis and St. Louis railroad, the Colorado Southern and the Des Moines and Fort Dodge railroad. Only recently his friends joined him in acquiring control of the Chicago and Alton railroad. He la also an important factor in the Colorado Fuel and Iron company, the Commercial Cable company and several large banking and trust concerns of New Tork. Salt Lake City furnishes another report of Interest concerning the Western Pacific. That company recently offered $750,000 for the Salt Lake and Loa Angeles railroad and the Salt Air Beach property. The railway U only thirteen miles in length, running from Salt Lake City to the shore of the lake, but its franchise covers a right of way into the city in connection with the Rio Grande and a trackage lease from the Oregon Short Line's old station. The offer waa not accepted, the owners, it is said, demanding $1,000,000. The right of way extends along the beach and around the south shore of the lake. The company recently to cover about 200 miles of westerly extensions, which it la thought might prove valuable to the Western Pacific. A 'Point Richmond dispatch of yesterday says: It is now definitely known that the Western Pacific railway will immediately begin construction. This fact was strengthened by the arrival of railway ties for the road this week at the San Pablo wharf. The ties have commenced arriving at the wharf, and are continuing to pile up In great heaps. The route for the Weatern Pacific has been quite receiflly surveyed through Point Richmond. As near aa can be ascertained by the Promotion Syndicate of this city the terminus of the new railroad will be located on the in the Immediate deep waterfront From vicinity of Point Richmond. that place it ia said a ferry steamer will ply with San Francisco, and another boat will likely take the freight cars across the ferry to the company's freight yards at South San Francisco. The movements of the builders of the line are kept secret for business reasons, and yet this much has leaked out here. But the Western Pacific is not the only line that is preparing to come to the Pacific coast, if all reports are to be believed. A New Tork dispatch, under date of the 17th, Bays: A survey has been made for an extension of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad to the Pacific coast. The authority for this statement Is the unofficial admission of one of the most influential directors of. the system. Several parties were sent out four years ago, and for two years they remained in the field, taking unusual precautions to keep their movements quiet, but when the rumor that the St. Paul was arranging to build a line to the Pacific coast first got into Wall Street, Chairman Roswell Miller said guardedly: HOSE ARE THE KIND THE BOY8 CANNOT THEY ARE MADE UP WITH LINEN KNEE, HEEL AND NO MEND WEAR OUT. No action has been taken by the St. Paul management. The directors may be depended upon, however, to do whatever Is necessary to protect the Interests of their property." Railroad affairs west of the Mississippi river are so shaping themselves that the Interests of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul road demand and Independent outlet to the Pacific. This is the view taken of the situation by the Rockefellers, who are the largest holders of St. Paul stock. The traffic agreement arranged a year ago between the St. Paul nn the Union Pacific has not worked out to the entire satisfaction of the St. Paul, Inasmuch as the relations between the Union Pacific and the Chicago and Northwestern continues to be very close. - Even though there is no ostensible discrimination againnt the SL Paul, it la apparent that the Northwestern is the real eastern outlet and feeder of the Union Pacific system.
