C. Lawrence, charged with attempting to assassinate J. D. Garrison, had to the crime. Lawrence, who ia even now postmaster nt Haaen, In Churchill county, was arrested three months ago and charged with attempting to murder Garrison. The latter had been in bis employ, and he owed him some money. Garrison accompanied him one day on a surveying trip and while out, Lawrence shot him in the head. Lawrence then went to Hnxen and reported that somebody had killed Garrison. Lawrence was nrreated for the murder and only for the prompt action of the officers would have been lynched. Since then, nnd until yesterday, he has pleaded entire Ignorance of the crime. He gives ns his excuse for the act thHt Garrison made an attempt upon his life nnd In an effort to protect himself he pulled the gun from his grasp nnd shot him. Lawrence I now feigning Insanity. He claims to see visions of his departed wife and child before him all the time. The officers place little credence In his plea, and are now of the opinion that the suspicion heretofore held that Lawrence committed numerous murders on the desert In Churchill county Is well founded. II. C. Lawrence, who broke Jail on Sunday night at Fallon did not enjoy hit liberty long. He was a fugitive for only two hours, wben he was between Franktown and Orrs ranch by an Indian named Jnck Pry-so- n and Deputy Wllkerson. When found Lawrence still had the hall and chain attached to hla leg. He had concealed himself In a brush patch. The Jail at gallon la a frame building and Lawrence effected hla escape In a comparatively easy manner. With a piece of Iron which he secured from his cot he sawed and pried an opening In the wall through which he made hla exit. Before disappearing he stuffed a suit of underclothing with paper and placed It' In his bed In such a manner ns to make1 it appear that he still occupied It. He hasn't got any mail any more to lay his clothes out, because be is minus the clothes. There wus a time when Utile Tod never wore the same suit of morning clothes more than three times at the outside. He used to ride down to the tracks from Long Island City in his private car, sending the hour of his ride In going over his big mall with hls private secretary. His I'unhard and Mercedes touring autos are all gone every thing of Tods Is gone. And yet I happen to know that only seven years ago Tod Sloan was worth 1400,000 at the least, and lots of Investments that he then had have since quadrupled in value. He was put on the right side of the market by such men as William Whitney and August Belmont, and It looked as If his game was never going to end. But from the hour the English Jockey club informed him not to apply for a renewed license Sloan has been losing out. Tm sorry. He never was a bad little man, Sloan. The money and the adulation turned hls head, It la true enough, and he went the distance with all the blind fatuity of a sudsed sailor, hut I happened to know that at the height of hls career he waa an extremely charitable chap, and a warm heart always did heat under those weird fancy waistcoats of hls. They say that Tim Sullivan and some other Influential turfmen are using their best efforts to have Tod reinstated on the New York tracks. I hope they succeed. I believe that he is as good a rider today as he ever was, and he has no trouble In keeping down to weight, being naturally a diminutive man. And If hes restored to standing hell be an acquisition. Theyll all be after him the minute they flee that hes anything like Tod Sloan used to he, and hell have another whack at the cornucopia of fortune. A desperate fight ensued In which Elliott wrenched Madigan gun away and shot him, inflicting a fatal wound. Hamilton then Interfered, but was laid out with a bullet that pierced his neck. The shooting created Intense excitement, but universally the public sympathizes with Elliott, who clearly shot to save himself. Madigan waa regarded as a dangerous man.
