Show 4 2 os NEW YORK j Letter Fashion L ! Spring ha not yet fairly begun, but during the past week there have been ut least a few comfortably warm and clear day. Only those who have lived in New York and have a etudy of observing fashions fully appreciate what a magic change the flrat few warm day of real spring weather will produce in avenue and the appearance of other unatocratlc thoroughfare In the vicinity of Central Park. The magnificent display of beautiful gowns, bewitching hnt and stunning coat or Jackets on uch day NEW YORK, JUNE S. remind one vividly of the dazzling sight of u balmy apring day on the Pari boulevard or the Iromenade at Nice or Monte Carlo. It is safe lb aay that never before ha there been such a remarkable variety of style and designs in gown, walats, Jacket, coats, hats and such a bewildering display of color than thi year. 1 More than at any other time individual there .liberty allowed to originality and although certain simple rule are generally conformed with there I less of the monotonous sameness than ever before. One of the moat striking features of the fashion displays I the great variety of colors shown. Among the most favored colors are various shades of pink and pinkish mnuve, all kinds of blues, from the palest to the darkest, with some especial shades, like hydrangea and hyacinth, the dainty and delicate willow and almond green, the aver popular ecru and, last but not least, the various tints of white. Light grays are used to some extent, but by no means as much as In former year. The same may be said of the various tones of champagne color, which was so extremely popular last year. Among the reds there are u few particularly favored shades, like coral, fruit and American Beauty. Browns are as popular as ever, the reason being, probably, that brown is becoming to nearly every combination of complexion, hair and eyes. There Is only one objection to it, it la not particularly suited for hot weather, ag it absorbs too much heat and also looks too warm. Unllned blouses are worn a great deni with dressy shirt and coat costumes nowadays and .there is none more popular and becoming than the blouse of batiste, trimmed with batiste embroidery or with a combination of embroidery and lace. Some exquisite specimens have been shown recently and they seem to be even more popular than lace blouses or those of fine lawn embroidery with lace trimmings. There is nothing prettier and daintier in the line of neglige than the garments after Japanese pattern, that are displayed in the shops at this time. The main features of the Japanese style are retained, but they are modified to adapt them to our conditions and the requirements ofi Amergarican methods of wearing these ments. to Imagine anything more artistic and delightful than these kimono robes, sacks and wrappers, which are equally beautiful In color, design and workmanship. In most cases soft crepe is the material of which they are made and on the crepe bird beautiful designs of flowers, or butterflies are embroidered by skillful hands. The combination of colors are charming and characteristically Japanese. Most of these summer negliges are cut rather low but the or necks are either round, pointed square. There sems to be no rule in regard to that point. The square neck seem to be particularly popular, probably because they are more becoming to various forms and shapes of It I UTAH DAILY 6 Is difficult necks. Soft finished taffeta is also used quite extensively for summer negliges, although it lacks the clinging softness and pliability which makes the softer crepes such delightful material for this purpose. Some of these taffeta negliges are in the form of outer robes, which are worn with a girdled under robe of soft and sheer material. These robes are quite hnndsome and picturesque, though less convenient than those made In one piece. Negliges In imitation of Japanese styles do not exclusively dominate the field of fashions In neglige costumes, however. Many women of taste prefer the French negliges in sheer lingerie, trimmed with batiste or Swiss embroideries or with lace and decorated with fine handwork in the form of trailing embroidery, delicate tucks, Some exquisitely etc. insertions, beautiful specimens of such negliges are shown In the shop. Some of them are marvels of workmanship and ar- ! J i past At present fashion decrees that the hair shall be parted in the middle and gently waved on either side. That is just where the trouble begins for those who have been wearing pompadours during the past year. Nearly all of them find that their hair, just where it should be full, shows more or less outspoken signs of baldness. This state of affairs, against which women had been warned a great many times during the past year, is entirely due The wearing of to the pompadour. "rats caused an overheating of the scalp and. In consequence thereof, a drying out of the glands nnd falling out of the hair. The punishment for is foolishly sinning against nature, fully deserved and rather mild at that. By systematic massage and the use of proper tonics a new growth of hair can be caused In most cases, but it will require several months of patience, before the normal condition of the scalp and hair are In the meantime the vicrestored. tims of their folly will be compelled to cover the bald spots with light tull bows or some other dainty orna. 1904. 3, Your Ice Free Carpets Alaska Refrigerator that point they hang in straight folds ed JUNE FRIDAY, JOURNAL, Our June Sale Will Commence Monday the Empire style. The short walsted robes are gathered in Just below the bust, where they are finished with a ribbon or embroidery girdle. From to the ground. Some of them are entirely untrimmed in the lower part, excepting, perhaps, a deep hem, while others have one or more flounce at the bottom, which cause the gown to fall in more graceful lines. These flounces also have a tendency to better preserve the general contour of the drapery. One of the most fashionable new materials in Paris is white taffeta and so great is the beauty of the material and so manifold are its advantages, that it will undoubtedly become equally popular here. The taffeta used is of the softest quality, which Is rather an important condition, as the stlffer and more unyielding grades of taffeta completely destroy the charming effect of the present style of gowns. Another material, which is extremely popular, is Eollenne, which, this year, is used for some charming and decidedly smart coat and shirt suits. This material is not particularly adapted for the most severe styles of tailor mades, but is well adapted to full boleros, plaited skirts and loose, short sleeves. For dressy afternoon frocks voile and taffeta are probably the most favored materials. Next in order come the crepes, Eollennes, chiffons, batistes, mousselines and fine cloths. They all have their special missions and are shown in the shops in a bewildering variety of styles and colors. For dainty summer wear there are also many other favored materials, like white and natural colored pongee, a score of weaves in linens and other materials. Women with an eye to economy will be glad to read the following suggestion by a writer on fashion matters: A pair of lace medallions, left over from last year's summer frock can be put to excellent use In trimming stockings to match the gown. For Instance, with a pongee gown piped with brown and trimmed with lace medallions, a plain pair of tan lisle stockings can be made very smart by the use of lace medallions, one Just above each instep. They are first on the stocking with silk thread In very line stitches, then the lisle beneath is carefully cut away and the edge of the stocking secured with button hole stitches placed closely and finely to the wrong side of the Worn with brown suede medallion. shoes they give a dainty finishing touch to the costume. The execreable montroslty of the big pompadour is, fortunately, going out of style and women are gradually returning to a saner and less ugly style of dressing the hair. Now comes the time when the women who were foolish enough to follow that abominable fashion will have occasion to regret their foolishness. Complaint are beginning to come from all sides and more are sure to come, as the pomthe padour becomes a nightmare of STATE For One Month With Every THAT IS PURCHASED FROM US COMMENCING TODAY AND ENDING JUNE 15TH WE WILL FUR-NIS- GoCarts H Your Ice Free for a Month WE WILL STAND BEHIND THE IN MANUFACTURER GUARANTEEING THE "ALASKA" TO BE THE BE8T REFRIGERATOR ON THE MARKET.
