Burts This Week at Tiii-GREA- THIS IS YOUR YEAR. The activities of the Democratic campaign for this year are just beginning; and the faithful never saw a rosier morn of hope than is now visible to their enraptured eyes. It is not alone dissension in the ranks of the enemy that encourages Democratic expectation; for that would indeed be a poor and ignoble reason if it stood alone. Hut it is that, while Republicans are quarreling and are determined to establish the rule or ruin of faction in various states, Democrats are gradually weld-in- g together into one solid mass. It is a good time to work. Democratic Brothers and Sisters, a good time to work. Begin at the primaries, continue the labor through the state convention and rely upon the national gathering at St. Louis to give to you a name for a sword and a platform for a buckler with which you can overthrow the Republican cohorts. Nothing but supreme darned foolishness at St. Louis can spoil the chance of Democratic victory this year. That is what the Republicans are depending upon. They have been looking backward, and they have seen some mistakes on the part of the Democratic party, from which they argue that a mistake this year is inevitable. But the hosts of the people are lookiug forward ignoring all the blunders of other years and determined that this year united Democracy shall select a representative of union on a platform of mutual faith and invite all the Democrats from Grover Cleveland clear around the circle to William J. Bryan, to get in and hoost for the ticket. Wake up, you Democrats in Utah; this is your year. Get toward the head of the procession. Don't wait until the whole cavalcade has gone by and then tag on out of hearing of the music. Get a move on yourselves; that is what Democrats are doing everywhere else in the United States; and they are going to keep up the move until they move Mr. Roosevelt out and move a great big Got Together Democrat into the White House. A BUSINESS MANAGER. United States Senator Dryden, of New Jersey, the head of a well advertised insur- ance company, is preferred by the old timers of the Republican party as campaign manager. They do not think that Cortelvou has had enough experience in the practical manipulation of political machinery; they are afraid that he may slip a cog somewhere or get a hot-boand, as they are going to furnish the oil for the axles, they want somebody who knows how, when and where to apply it. Dryden is their ideal. He is reputed to be millions of dollars; this worth twenty-fiv- e shows that he knows the value of money. He has built up an enormous insurance business in the town of Newark, New Jersey, against the older companies in the greater city of New York; and this shows .that he knows how to boom his wares to the popular acceptance. Old timers are afraid that Cortelvou will permit the president to run him and they are convinced that the president's impulses in the fray may be an unsafe guide. The lamented and able Hanna demonstrated that getting what you want is purely a business proposition; and that the securing of the presidency should be entrusted to a man who knows how to get the goods when the price is paid. Therefore, Dryden. x; BLACK DRESS GOODS . p A PETT1GOAT SPECIAL $1.50 BURT S. J. j PERSONAL BROTHERS j THESE? POINTERS! irresistible. The Spanish geography maker builded better than he knew. While they are maintaining their determined attitude there are not wanting signs of a star to arise in Utah county. It is probable that Senator Smoot will push E. H. Callister of Salt Lake, as against. Wells or Hammond or even our own northern man; but in case it becomes evident that Callister cannot get the nomination, what is the matter with former postmaster John C. Graham of Provo? He is a most useful man to Senator Smoot, although circumstances, not to be deemed anything but complimentary to himself, have prevented his retention of federal offices. With the redoubtable Ed Loose as national committeeman, with Editor Graham as governor, with himself in the senate and with Mr. Kearns on the toboggan, politics could be one grand, sweet song for the junior senator. 1 It should have been unnecessary for Hon. Perry S. Heath to deny that silly story which was circulated to the effect that he intended to abandon Salt Lake and all his interests there and move to Nova Scotia. Mr. Heath was officially welcomed to Salt Lake in the summer of 1900; and so far as the public is advised that welcome has never been with- drawn. hs Driver may make her future home In the coast city.
