UTAH. i DC DC DRY GOODS SEE PAINE IF YOU WANT & HURST sixty-seve- It is to be hoped that the difference be tween the making of a personal protest and the organization of a political party has at last become manifest to the minds of public writers in Salt Lake City. In all probability, the men who called the preliminary meetAmerican movement had ings of the no intention of creating a separate political party at this time ; but even if they had entertained such views, they surely have been convinced by this date that the hour is not opportune. The leaders of the protestants must be aware now that the only thing which can drive the Gentiles into a separate political organization in this state is for the Deseret News and its owners to persistently and deliberately force them into that attitude. The movement in Salt Lake will have accomplished all of its present purpose, when it achieves a significant protest to the congress and people of the United states against the utterances of President Johscp F. 'Smith with which utterances many of the Gentiles in Salt Lake disagree. The formation of the protesting body may make the establishment of a Gentile party easier at some future time, but that end can only be reached in case of further aggravation and is quite as much to be deplored as would be the establishment or continuance of church rule in politics. The protestants desire to have an American policy in Utah. That would not be attained by having a liberal party on one side and the Mormon party on the other; for this division would create conditions. Patience and a little forbearance on the part of the people who are not directly and intensely involved in the quarrel between the protestants and the Deseret News will be of great value in this emergency. If the majority of the people who recognize the right of the protestants to express their views and who yet oppose the formation of a Gentile party will keep their heads cool and their hearts warm toward Utah and the nation, neither the Smoot case nor anything connected therewith can permanently disturb or seriously injure the material and sentimental progress of this state as a mighty commonwealth of the union. so-call- ed A PROVOKER OF ANARCHY. Governor James H. Peabody of Colorado is more of a provoker of anarchy than was Bloody Bridle Waite, formerly chief executive of our neighbor state. Waite was charged with having encouraged dangerous ideas and practices, but his motive was to secure the people's rights; Peabody tempts men into disrespect for law and order by his misuse of executive power to take away the peoples rights. Governor Peabody outrages all decency by declaring counties of his state to be in a state of insurrection and rebellion and placing them under martial law, all at the behest of the big operators of coal mines and in order that under the cover of the military miners and citizens of the state may be violently deported from their homes and kept out of the counties where they are taxpayers and legal voters. This method is infinitely more dangerous than that of former Governor Waite. Peabodys method provokes in the average citizen such a feeling of indignation as that the law, outraged by the chief executive, becomes of little moment in the eyes of the oppressed miner; and whatever excesses may be committed by strikers or those who sympathize with them, the direct responsibility for the evil is traceable to the governors office and is chargeable to his improper subordination of the power of the state, to the will of the answer it.
