At a recent meeting of the New Growers' York Fruit association, there was found among the commercial orchardlats present, considerable difference of opinion in regard to the proper distance of planting apple trees for a commercial orchard, varying from 15x15 to 30x30 feet. In experience of the different members, those who would plant more closely were sure that the trees helped to protect one another, that trees so planted fruited at a younger age than trees widely planted. The whole question devolved bn the nerve of the orchard-Is- t. Those who favored close planting urged that the commercial planter was In a sense a manufacturer, and should not be expected to have decision enough to cut out the alternate trees at the proper time. This work Is not a matter of sentiment hampered by a regard for the tree, but a business proposition. It was conceded that the farmer planting a family orchard would not cut at the proper time. Therefore the family orchard must be planted wltn ample room. A number of the orchardlats present stated that the perma nent trees did better by reason of the protection afforded by the alternate trees. In addition to which the orch ardists secured several crops of ap pies from alternate trees before time for removal. Removal of alternate trees may be delayed by shortening their limbs, and thus allowing the proper development of the permanent trees. Be WASHINGTON, cause the entire purpose of the reclamation act threatens to be nullified by the decision In the suit now before the supreme court between the state of Kansas and the state of Colorado, the government has filed a petition of Intervention. Department of justice officials of the reclamation service are greatly Interested In the outcome. The future of 10,000,000 acres of once arid lands that have been reclaimed by Irrigation, and of fully acres of land in the arid region which the government proposes to reclaim, is bound up in the decision of this case, according to the petition of Intervention of the government, which Knox has filed. Attorney-GenerThe legal fight between Kansas and Colorado is a remarkable one. It Is a ownership of the dispute over the waters of the Arkansas river, whlcn rises in Colorado and flows for 280 miles in that state, then enters Kansas and flows 810 miles In that state, until It enters Oklahoma. The claim of neither state is ad mitted by the government Both con tentlons are alike dangerous for the government and for that reason the United States has Intervened. Unless the supreme court holds that the government's right to the appropriation of the waters of interstate streams Is superior to the right of the states. It seems Inevitable the reclamation act or Irigation law will become a dead letter.
