You may believe that the change is a most welcome one to the company, which has uncomplainingly poured money Into the enterprise for the past two years at a rate and under such conditions that would cause many operators to bait To see something coming In without having to go down Into their pocketa for it, will seem mighty strange, but I guess we can stand It all right one-ha- to cagoans are interested. In 1893 Mr. Hulteberg was engaged by the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant to go to Cape Nome as a Mr. missionary for the society. Hulteberg established a school at Golovin bay, where he remained until 1898, when failing health forced him to return to the United States' for a year. His assistant at Golovin bay was P. H. Anderson. Just before returning Mr. Hulteberg found a pocket" of gold and now claims to be the original discoverer of the Nome gold region. He located his claim and left It In the care of Mr. Anderson, with the understanding, he says, that it was to be staked out and held In trust for the church society. Mr. Hulteberg did not return to Alaska until 1899. He found that during hla absence Mr. Anderson, with the aid of Gabriel Price, a prac tical miner, had staked out nine claims adjoining the original claim. These claims were held In the names of var ious individuals. The last two were known as No. 8 and No. 9. It Is claim No. 9 that the society seeks to recover. Mr. Anderson took into partnership with him Dr. Johnson of Chicago, who was acting physician for the Swedish Mission society. In 1902 they formed the White Star Mining com Last May the pany of California. White Star Mining company of Illinois was organised in Chicago. It Is charged by President C. A. BJork of the Swedish missions that the sole object of the forming of these corporations, one selling out to the other, was to cloud the title to the property, and thus prevent the society from getting relief at law. Since 1889, it Is declared, Mr. Anderson has taken out (480,000 In gold, Claim No. 8. it la said, has netted Mr. Prices omethlng like (800,000. The total tonnage of vessels to the Seward peninsula during the season of 1903 aggregated 96,822. While some of the older creeks of this region have been nearly stripped placer mining in the peninsula, as a whole, Is but fairly begun. The Introduction of better methods has en tlrely changed the character of operations. Placers which under the old conditions could not be touched, can now with the aid of hydraulic methods, steam hoists and shovels, etc. be made to yield a handsome profit. While It is improbable that any creek gravels yielding less than (2 or (3 per cubic yard have been mined at a profit, there is no doubt that ground of a much lower grade will prove profitable In the near future. The placer gold of the Seward peninsula is remarkable for wide distribution and variety of occurence. Beside the creek and gulch gravels, with which the beach deposits have thus far produced most of the gold, there are the bench placers, the high benches, the old benches and the gravel plain placers. The last mentioned have only recently received at. tentlon and there la no reason to be lleve the limit of discoveries has been reached.
