Show r ' DAILY 6 STATE JOURNAL, UTAH SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, A Good per cent However, manipulation by the icickers trust is nut altogether responsible for the low prices of slock, according to J. C. Leary of the Union stock yards at Balt Lake. "The juices for cattle are lower than they have been at any other time since the civil war," he said yesterday. There are several causes for this. To begin with, early in the season there was a prosjiect of a eenreity In the corn crop. Men who make a business of feeding cattle for the market consequently did not feel like paying the Irict-- prevailing lust year. The growers would uot come down, and as a result they had the stock left on their hands. Ijirge amounts of money were tied up In cattle. Boon the commission men and others who had been loaning this money began to urge the marketing of the product and the payment of the loans. This kept a 'big stream flowing steadily to tbe market, and largely feeders, for which there was small demand. The packers did not bid against each other, and the prices dropped on all grades. Still the stock was forced to the market. The foreign demand fell off, the Boer war and other unusual conditions being over. Times generally have not been so prosperous within the last few months and domestic demand has fallen off. All these conditions have pushed down the prices. The receipts of cattle at Chicago so far this year are probably 300,000 to 500,000 head over what they were for the same period last year, while the prices are fully 83 per cent less. Since the com crop showed up so well, there has been an Increased demand for feeders, but at tbe lower prices. The price of dressed meat has not been reduced In proportion to the fall in the cost of animals on the hoof. The consumer is paying the cost of everything. 20 FIGHT THE TRUST COMPANY BEEN ORGANIZED. INDEPENDENT HAS Its Object Is the Protection of the Pro ducers and Consumers of the Country. Preparations are being made by the stockmen of the country to organise an Independent parking company and the result will be a mighty struggle with the puckers trust The agitation for nn independent company has been under way for some time and the project is now beginning to assume definite ehiipe. The proposition is one lit which Utah stockmen are keenly interested as the formation of art independent company, with its own stockyards and packing houses, means deliverance from the payment of tribute to the packers trust and the consequent enhancement of the value of the property 6t the livestock owners of this state. The new company has been organized under the laws of Arisona and is known as the Independent Packing company. The Utah members of the bourd of directors are Jesse M. Smith and M. s K, Parsons of Salt Lake. The Idaho members are F. J. Hagenbarth of Spencer and Salt Lake and John McMillan of Boise. R R Sel way of Sheridan, Wyo., Is a director from that state. L. F.
