Show DAILY 4 UTAH STATE JOURNAL, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER PANAMA IS OURS . UTAH STATE JOURNAL) OGDEN, UTAH. rec-logniz- patriots; stroyed; their dearest rights assailed; seats in the Utah Legislature will go down in the es- teem of practical politicians further than the 1003. This Year Panama, the new republic, which was by the United States today, may projierly be called the youngest of our territorial family; for, despite her high sounding and independent title, she will be as much ours to all intents and purposes as Hawaii. The segregation of Panama from Colombia has not been accomplished without difficulty; and but for the attitude of the United States would have been impossible. Under the new treaty which will be effected, the United States will control the canal zone and, by pay-- 1 ing an annuity cf a quarter of a million to the little republic, will furnish a large share of the maintenance of the new government. Indeed, two important cities of the republic, Panama and Colon, being in the canal zone, will be entirely under our jurisdiction, Whatever may be the discontent felt by the pewers of Europe at this commanding seizure by the United States of strategic points in the South, it is unlikely that any formal protest will be made; and, so far as the weak cries of Colombia or any other South American try are concerned, they, will fall on deaf ears. We want Panama; we have got Panama, Incidentally, this transaction illustrates the superlative power of commerce in this world. The canal deal is the reason for the r, organization of the new republic and its nition. Formerly, republics were established to secure the higher rights of mankind; now they are created to aid in stock speculations, Hon. IV. S.
