S. Pistol Discharged While Mr. 8mith Paul Van Komen, Onwsr of Quarry, la Instructed to Maks Provision Against Accidents. Was Taking It From His Pocket. Nick Smith, well known among the younger men of the city and who has been acting in the capacity of a special policeman since last fall's holdup scare, accidentally shot himself through the body with a Colt's pistol late on Saturday afternoon while making an arrest near the Becker Brewing company's plant Mr. Smith owns a small ranch between Glasgow addition and the Oregon Short Line tracks, which is frequented by the hobo element, and on Saturday he armed himself with a psitol and soon brought three of the. offenders to a halt and placed them under arrest He then took the prisoners to a place near the Becker Brewing Co's, office and telephoned for the patrol wagon. While awaiting the arrival of the wagon he leaned against an iron railing in front of a row of young trees and in some manner his pistol, which he carried barrel end up in the right hip pocket, got caught In the pickets of the railing. He reached back in an attempt to release it and in doing so he pressed the point of the barrel into his side and began to pull it from the pocket. Suddenly there was a report and Mr. Smith reeled forward. He staggered off for some twenty yards and then fell to the ground. The bullet entered the body st a point over the right hip and emerged from the center of the breast bone. In the meantime the patrol with Of- ficers Burke, Hadlock and Layne had arrived. The hoboes had made their escape before the arrival of the officers and the latter at first were bewildered and unable to realise the situation. Mr. Smith soon rallied enough, however, to tell what had happened and Dr. R. S. Joyce and the hospital ambulance were then immediately summoned and Mr. Smith was sent to the hospital in charge of Officer Hadlock. The wound is considered very serious. The bullet barely missed the intestines, but penetrated the liver.
