There was a time when Ogden, in the splendid unity of her people and in the high ideals of her community life, outranked all other cities in the mountains. That was the Ogden which attracted the great, strong, progressive spirits the men who looked over the field and found this spot fair to see, with conditions prophetic of prog ress and happy life, and who brought to us their energy and their money to aid the city's greatness. The ideal was for a town of safe progress; for a town where the common good was the object to M attained by the common effort. What has caused a partial cessation of the influx of substantial men and money to aid in the city building? In the old days Ogden got more than a proportion; now Salt Lake gets nearly all of this attention. Only a few out of the hundreds of strong men migrating into Utah annually, cast their lot with Ogden. The answer is found in the overwhelming vanity and wicked purposes of that buccaneer who has made of the Ogden ship a pirate craft. In place of community purposes, for the vast general weal, he has substituted his ambition for private gain and general notoriety. He has been a trouble breeder. He has held nothing sacred from the defamation of his tongue and pen not even the grave has hidden the victim of his hateful rage. He has substituted the big I of his own offensive personality for the great common interest of all citizens of the community. His graft, his boodling, his insane egotism, have made Ogden the object of sneering laughter throughout the state and the country. As soon as a stranger comes to Utah intending to settle, he quickly catches the satire against Ogden. The majority' of men will not deliberately locate in a town where such an unspeakable wretch as the mayor of this city, who publicly boasts of public felony committed, stands as the dominant personality of the community. They go elsewhere' He has had his own way iu this city for nearly ten years; and that despicable way has, by graft and boodling, profited only himself and has driven away the people and capital which otherwise would have come to aid the city to a mighty destiny. At last the citizens are aroused against this condition. They have demonstrated that they can throw off this vampire.
