The Plutes are considerably stirred up over the death sentence, and declare that they will murder every white person within their reach if the sentence Is executed. The whites, realising the gravity of the situation, are circulating a petition asking the governor to commute the sentence to life imprisonment. January 12th is the date set for the execution. That the Indians will carry out their threat seems certain. The other day Henry Welsh and Walter Redmond, two prospectors, reached the Vegas ranch, stating that they had been driven In by the Indlnns, four of whom appeared near their mines and, without warning, opened lire. The men had been prepared by the rumors of an uprising, and so made their escape uninjured, though the Indians destroyed their cabins and have probably blown up the mining machinery. While the city has many advantages, there is also one great objection to a conventions being held here, and that Is its location. Most of the delegatee would have to take long railway Journeys, entailing much loss of time and an extra expenditure of money. New Yorkers meet this argument, however, with the statement that the convention has gone six .times to Baltimore and the Republicans once, while there have been three Republic- an conventions at Philadelphia and two Democratic.
