All the gold was In twenty dollar pieces except about half a dozen five dollar pieces, and all the coins were of dates of more than thirty years ago. Indicating that the treasure had been burled there about that length of time and before the slaughter house was built. About three months ago Menzel discovered some chicken thieves running away from the slaughter house at nightfall. He examined the tracks in the yard next morning with particular care, trying to get some clue to the thieves. lie found then about $30 In gold coin In the hog yard. He thought the thieves had dropped the coin In their flight He made no further search, picking up only what was plainly visible. He found a twenty dollar gold piece on the spot where the hogs had rooted up the ground to an unusual depth. Then he got a rake and shovel and made close search within a radius of ten feet, and at a depth of a foot or less he got almost $1,000. The silver coins were tarnished and unrecognisable. The gold coins were bright and lustrous No one can account for the burled treasure. It la only surmised that it was secreted there by a miner about thirty years ago, who died, and the secret of the hiding place of the coin was burled with him. Later the slaughter house was built, and now the hogs have rooted up the soil deep enough to reveal the gold. John Dillon of Dublin Urges That tion Looking to Relief Bs Taken. EXAMINING MANY WITNESSES IN WEBER CASE. the I.OXDOX, Dec. 6. Following m lories published last week to the effect that famine threatened the western counties of Ireland, John Dillon, member of parliament from East Mayo, was asked to describe the conditions as they now exist and the prospects for the coming winter. In reply the noted Irish leader telegraphed as follows: The Inimlnency of a famine In the western counties of Ireland Is of a very grave nature, despite the attempts that have been made to discredit the reports of the seriousness of the situation. I am communicating with the English government, urging immediate action. If the government does not act, I shall address a called mass meeting, giving my views of the situation fully. "We In Ireland have been and are very reluctant to raise the cry of distress, being Influenced by repeated experience of the horror that relief works. The English press first drew attention to the altuatlon In the west of Ireland, and I fear their statements are only too well founded. The situation has been greatly aggravated by the breaking down of the provisions of the land act Intended to remedy the congestion. It now looks as though the grand Jury will make a more searching Investigation Into the Weber case than was made In the coroner's inquest or preliminary examination, and the witnesses are are subjected to long and closer questioning than on the other two occasions. Some of the men on the jury know something of the Inquisitions, nd will Insist on probing to the very bottom of the evidence before drawing their conclusions. There seems to be no doubt but that Indictments will he They brought against the prisoner. will not be upon hearsay evidence or newspaper reports, but from the deductions made from the testimony brought before the Jury. It was predicted that there would not be as many witnesses examined before the Jury as were sworn before the two previous examinations, but there will be no skimming over the evidence nor lack of testimony to enable the jurors to determine the merits of the case. It Is stated now that the grand Jury will probably be In session for two weeks at least, which Is twice the time usually consumed by the sessions. While the Inquisitorial body aits in secret session In the third story of the the object of its Inquiry courthouse, passes his time lightly In his cell In the basemen L This Is a fixed term for the Jail adopted by the inmates, who have dignified their quarters as far as possible by this title. The youth, whose character seems to have infinite phases, continues to be talked about. In fact, more Is said now about Weber than of the crimes he Is charged with. Nothing he could do or say would seem surprising, as his moods are changeable, and while at times maintaining a- pleaaant appearance and a smiling face, he Is Just rs liable to grow sarcastic and defiant, as he is to protest his innocence. The stoical front he put up at the beginning of his trouble has all vanished and his confinement has made him talkative whenever opportunity offers. When his Jailers are out, he Indulges In conversation through the partition with the other prisoner. At first he Vould not respond to Inquiries from reporters, and regarded them rather contemptuously, bitt he now realizes that this Is the only way In which he can voice his utterances to the public, and he Is pleased to see members of the press, but as the order to cease Interviewing has been put on by Sheriff Geena, his repeated statements of his innocence will not be heard of much until the trlaL The prisoner Is Inclined to be vain, and he thoroughly realises now that, his name has been sounded throughout the land In connection with the most Inhuman act that has been recorded In the annals of crime. He Is haughty In his air towards those who serve him. Last night Deputy Fulton carried the prisoners supper to him on a tray. Weber stood In the middle of his cel contemplating the officer as the latter was unlocking the cage door to hand in his evening meal. The prisoner holds his head erect, and has at all times a military bearing. Take It In there, said Weber in an authoritative tone, as he pointed to a table at the further end of the cell. Fulton started at the prisoner a moment, set the tray down Just Inside the door, and walked away. He did not respond to - WVber's order. Weber never answers a question he considers Impertinent. He has talked more than he should. Despite the adof his attorneys he has monishing said things which have injured him, and helped to confirm the suspicions against him. He Is a hard client to handle and takes unkindly to advice, lie Is a wonderful youth, and his character is as actively talked of today as it was when he was first arrested. His previous life has been almost a retired one. as he was not generally known to the people here, having a limited number of acquaintances, and he never seems to have attracted any attention only by his reticent manner and perculiur actions. While he was attending dancing parties he has never with mingled the promiscuously crowd s and the slaying of his family was the first general notice that has been given him. Coroner Shepard, who Is well acquainted with Weber, recently asked him if he had ever' thought of the hereafter, and what he would have to answer for. Weber turned his gaze away from the officer and did not deign to answer. . The discussion as to identifying the coin found by Clarence Gear as being that taken from the bank continues.
