Show DAILY PACE BIX. STATE JOURNAL. UTAH SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1904. MINT WANT COLORED SILKS SPUN. $ School cKptes Experimenters Try Their Hand at Breeding Variegated Caterpillars. Some audacious experimenters have been endeavoring to make tbe silkworm spin colored silks. .Primarily they were endeavoring to ascertain if the green color of some natural silks la produced in any way by the leaves upon which the worms leed, but the work suggests the possibility of securing beautifully tinted raw silks. Several lota of caterplllara were fed from their birth upon leaves Impregnated with a red dye. They ate their livid meala without any show of repugnance, and noon began to take on a reddish tint throughout the body. When allowed ta spin on freshly cob lected natural branches these worms produced a silk, tba whole cocoon presenting a beautiful red coloration. Certain colors, notably blue, were, not ao apparent In their- - effect and the worms did not seem to relish the blue leaves as well as the red ones. One of the questions that naturally presents itself to the Inquiring mind la whether selective breeding of such artificially stained caterplllara would not result In a race In which the coloration became permanent The fact Is clearly sstabllshed that the digestive tube has a marked Influence on the silk. As a French writer declares la green silks It is tbs cholorphyl of the leaves that we observe, and In yellow silks the pigment comes directly from the mulberry leaves, with which It Is Identical. In Ogden and Other Cities JULIP WITHOUT RYE. Genius Has Invented What He Cklla a Compromise. Of course it's hard to improve on the mint Julep aa a hot weather bev-- i erage, said the communicative bar-- ; tender, but I've got one that I call 'the compromise that often cornea in bandy. It's built exactly on the same plans as the ordinary product of old Kentucky, except that the foundation stone Is laid with sherry, instead of with rye. There are lots of men who revel in the mint Julep, just because of the aroma of mint, but they are afraid of Its seductive powers. The strength of the concoction proves too much for them. It is for such drinkers that I have invented the compromise, ss I call It They get all the aroma of the Julep without its knockout propensities. It la also effective in cases where Jags come in and demand mint Juleps. Under such circumstances the compromise come in handy, and the chances are that the Jag doesn't know the difference."
