In its February report covering January, the bank said the increased economic activity of late 1971 appears to have carried over into the first two months of 1972, but the high personal savings rate and ' sales retail ut post-freez- e" developments may be the reason for the buyers careful attitude. The business outlook appeared brighter, according to the report, which said the record levels of housing starts and building permits in December increase the likelihood that the housing boom would continue into the first part of this year. Also, the latest survey of plant and equipment spending intentions for this year suggest a strengthening of business investment, the report said. In bond and money trading, the bank reported that preliminary estimates indicate the narrow money supply rose in January at a 3.5 per cent, seasonally adjusted annual rate, the largest for any month since July, 1971 . The 11,300-fohigh slopes of Brian Head overlook historic Cedar Breaks National Monument on one side and Bear Flat Valley, the site , of the ski resort, on the other. Brian Head is but 29 miles from Cedar City, Utah. Other driving distances include 80 miles to SL George; 180 miles to Las Vegas. 260 miles to Salt Lake City, 470 miles to Los Angeles, 480 miles to Phoenix and 500 miles to San . nt ot : . Diego. . The ski resort began in 1964 when the first chair lift and were installed for the grand opening on Jan. 7, 1965, when 2,000 free chair rides were given along with a barbecue. Brian Head is the dream of Burt Nichols, an Orange County, California electrical engineer who en T-b- ar visioned the development of his own ski resort in 1957. He and fellow engineers began to search for a possible site for developing a new resort Then in 1959 he was attached . to the U.S. Army at Kaiserslautern, Germany as a civilian engineer. This gave him a welcome opportunity to visit European ski resorts. And for 2)4 years he made a detailed study and operation analysis of 15 selected ski areas. Eight Hours Away It was a liberal education in the total planning and design of a ski resort, Mr. Nichols has said. The major thing I learned was the Importance of total integration of the community with the lifts." In April 1962 he returned to the United States and began to devote his full energies to developing a ski resort. He renewed his search for a suitable location within eight driving hours of the Los Angeles area, he came up with four choice areas, including Williams, Arlz. and Brian Head, Utah. He first moved to Williams and formed a corporation that built a small lift and day lodge, which he subsequently operated himself. But every chance he could, he visited Brian Head, which he e pothought had greater tential than any of the four sites. Finally in January of 1964 he moved to Cedar City and assembled a corporation that began the development of Brian Head. long-rang- |
