But, only 4.2 of the total dollars spent by Hill Air Force Base (OOAMA) for base and central procurement was spent in Utah. The 813,345,058 spent within the State by the States largest employer was a considerably small sum due to the fact that few Utah firms bid (competitively) for the contracts. Each year there are many items needed by OOAMA that could be produced by Utah industries: photographic and film processing equipment; aerospace ground handling equipment parts; sheet metal aircraft parts; hardware; light machined parts ; engineering services; wheel and brake parts; insulating blankets; cable assemblies; service and repair ; wire harnesses ; kit assemblies; plastic parts; and containers. But each year only a few Utah industries bid, aggressively with competitive prices. The fault is not that of Hill Air Force Base. The Base communicates with local contractors through a number of channels. Previous sources are contacted and bidders lists are posted. The Base also advertises in Commerce Business Daily, and operates two bid information centers, one in Salt Lake City and one at the Base. In order that Utah manufacturers may be made aware of the bidding procedure and the opportunities available, the Utah Manufacturers Association will hold a short briefing March 11, 1971, at 10:30 a.m., Mountain Fuel Co., 180 East 1st South.
