Show E c DAILY CCCQTRE REPORTER, I t, APRIL MONDAY, ' i ; . . 17, 1871.!' Editor. DENNIS J. TOOIIY, the Utah Ffsa fait Dll U mriEO. Op Mr The Ohlo lieiarenae ieeherf Bea4faarteri Cptlr Its Ipprih-Wealhar-- Ele. from oar Traveling Correspondent! 'Ophir City, April LI, 1871. I left Salt Lake City ycstcrdify morning on ono of the elegant stage of 'Wines & Kimlmll, and arrired in this place, after a Journey of nine hours. The road from Salt Lake city is in a pretty good traveling condition, and travelers are put through on fast time, and with as much cno and comfort as such thoroughly experienced stagernen Wines & Kimball have at their disposal. Although it was rumored that the faro between Ophir and Salt Lake, would bo raided as soon as tho opjwrition was withdrawn, these gentlemen continue to convey travelers at their old rates fo for the trip, at least Sixty miles between tho two point. For coaches have been some time two out Lake of Salt daily for the mines, running carrying as many as twelve passengers to the load, but tho paid two days only one coach has been running, and that has been taxed to its utmost capacity. The line is t i ' t " 5 six-hor- h se stocked with excellent teams, and is represented by the best Jehus oftlhe old overland line. One of the best features of this stage line consists in its splendid eating stations, of which there are two, but wo understand only one will be patronized hereafter, that of John Eaves, formerly of Corlnne. Mr. Eaves, in selling out hil lino to AVine & Kimball, bound the latter gentlemen to stop their stages at his place for dinner for the term of two years,, and if the meal wo had at 31 rN Eaves is a criterion to go by, travelers will not find fuult in stopping there to apr pease their appetite. Mis Knitna doe the honors of the table, while 3fr. Eaves superintends tho affairs of tho kitchen atul the ladles department. 31 r. Eaves informed mo that it wa his intention to build a large two-stohouse on tho present site, ami make general preparation to accommodate tho Increased travel which will follow the completion of tho City of Corinno.' His place will bo about a milla from tbo steamboat landing. Up the Canyon Deforo reaching Ophir City the stage pass up through a narrow caflon, passably good road, and not ns stoop ns ono would lo lend to supjoso from tho looks of tho 'd mountains ahead. From tho on-- s tranco of the enfion to tho new mining metropolis, a dUtnnco of about five mile, miners cabins, constructed of lumber and log, nro passed on either side, whilo tho lower levels oftjo Oquirrh range already givo evidence of tho prospecting energy of the hardy silver hunter. Hut no life was visible, and nothing save holes, and mounds of dirt, dotted tho foot-hill- s. Along up the enfion these evidences of mining appeared, and every now and then the boom of some huge llut would send a thundering echo along the hills, reverberating back and fourth until its sound was caught up by the winds and hurried over tho mountain top. J ut before entering tho city, tho foundation of the smelting ftimaeo of tho Wasatch Company of Omaha, with nearly all the machinery on the ground, is passed. A few hundred yards further up tho pioneer smelting furnace stands. Tho town now appear in full view, and as the'stago moves along tho uneven, rocky street, tho census of tho populace might bo taken with accuracy, for everybody piles into tho street with charactorUiic .curiosity to greet the vehicle, and see who is coming. I was agreeably surprised to see so large a town, and so many good buildings, forming two rows for nearly a mile In length. Hero the. cafion is not more than one hundred yards in width, and there is just room " for two narrow streets, and a limited strip of ground between them on cither side for building purposes. The houses any far better than thoso I have seen in other mining towns, and Ophir presents a very cheering appearance to new coiners. A stream of limpid water, cool and sweet as if from a fountain, courses through tho place very handy for all purpose. "A towering mountain, rising almost perpendicularly for a thousand feet above tho city, forms a rocky wall to the right as you go up tho enfion and on tho left, though with a greater incline, is a similar elevation, completely walling In the city, as if to protect it from invading storms. But the fissuro between these mountain compresses tho wind, and it occasionally sweeps down tho cafion with hftir-lifUforce. A signal station hero for telegraphing tho weather, woul4 not bo troubled with reporting many changes, as tho storm report would bo tho only feature. It snowed and blowcd yesterday and this morning, but I have hoics that the indications of a pleasant afternoon will not prove fickle, when I' will pass around and take a look at things in general, and dot them . Tho' telegraph of last Saturday brought news from Washington that Judge Strickland, of this Territory, was at the Capital deasking for an appropriation off30,000 to courts federal tho here; fray the expenses of but whoever has charge of trahsmitting news went a little out of his way for sensation. Reference was mado to tho contingency of vigilance committees in ease the government did not hand over that large sum of money from tho national treasury. Two mistakes we think are involved in themeisage, namely : that there is no such extravagant sum required for the purpose indicated, and next, that instead of vigilante appearing in the Territory, it should be stated that already tho chnrchJ has long since provided for tribunals to those extra, or court'. of the take It is not legal place likely that Judge Strickland, who is a man, Intimated any threats ofthe Nevada system, for there is no place oq the continent where such a rulo would be le apt to obtain a foothold than in Utah.
