AND WALL FANCY New York, June 23 In the Tweed case yesterday a legal war of words took placo which lasted nearly an hour, Phelps and Peckham on behalf of the people claiming there was no reason why the case shou'd be made a special one, or special favor be shown to the defendant. Field demanded to know what special favors have b en shown nr would be. My client, said( he, lias lor seven months been illegally confined in the penitentiary, and when, after committing this outrage, an outrage for which every one concerned in it shall be held strictly accountable, and after he is released by a higher power than themselves, it is wrong and unjust to ask us to plead to an indictment of which we know nothing. Tweeds counsel said it could not be considered a special favor to issue a warrant in a civil suit of six millions, and fix the bail at the enormous figure of three millions, and that such bail was unheard of. Yes, said Poekham, and the stealing of six million was an unheard of thing until the defendant committed the thieft. Here the matter rested and Tweed was taken in custody and conveyed to jail, where be remains until the three miUlioa bail is furnished. t Carriage Repairing Painting and Trimming and dloighj made to order Wajon, NORTH FRONT STRKCf, UTAH - ' j ritST-CLAS- TABU AID i I STATIONERY, PICTURE FINE wines, liquors, and cigars. .
