"While some members of the crew of the British whaleT Bolynia were on shore at Batty Bay on the 29th of July in search of a suitable watering plaee, they discovered a cairn on a low point on the north side of the bay. Judging it had been erected by soma party belonging to ono f the various expeditions sent in search f Sir John Franklin, they tmllod it down, and in the interior of it found a tin canister, about twelve inches in length and four in diameter, the lid being soldered on. Captain Kilgour opened the canister, and it was found to contain reports deposited on the 6th of August, 1S53, by Captain Wm. Kennedy, of the Prince Albert, Lady Franklins vessel. In the course of the day a sledge, a stove, two ice knives, and various other articles, were picked upon tho south side of tba bay, whero it appeared Captain Kennedys party had encamped. Tho records disclosed the" fact that Captain Kennedy went into winter quarters in Batty Bay in the autumn of 1S51, and it was not until the 6th of August, 1S52, that the ice broke up and liberated his vessel. It is obvious that Batty Bay had not been visited since 4S52. The records are now in England, in an excellent state of preservation. Only about 130,000 French people havo settled in Algeria, and France has had possession of that country for forty years. French population is, however, constantly decreasing.
