This morning at a few minutes past 3, flames were discovered issuing from a Chinese tenement house situated on the corner of Fifth and Front streets. The cry of fire was immediately raised, and in a short period a large crowd was gathered, with buckets, axes, etc., ready for service. Everybody sot to work vigorously carrying water from the neighboring ditches, demolishing fences and removing articles from the adjoining houses. Tbe flames continued to spread however, and in a few moments tbe Chinese tenement house adjoining The resion the west was enveloped. dence of H. H. Shepherd is west of the latter place about twenty feet, and a concentrated effort was then put forth to save thi3 building. Although the flames were leaping thirty to forty feet high, men were on han at tbe corners and on the roof to pour a continual stream of water, brought by willing hands from the hydrants and ditches in the vicinity. In a half hour tbe flames subsided, and Mr. Shepherds house was saved, but not before that side of it in proximity to the burned houses was charred entirely. The buildings burned were worth about $2,500; and in addition $400 worth of opium, $150 in greenbacks, and part of the household effects of the tenants and inmates were lost. It was only by herculean .efforts on the part of the citizens, who worked to a unit, that its progress was stopped, and a visit to the scene makes us wonder that it was at all possible.
